WinZSNES? - May 18, '00 by JoseQ
The news page at the ZSNES Home Page was updated with news about progress on the emulator. While the sad news about zsKnight loosing interest on working on the emulator were posted, some good news were mentioned as well. A Windows port of this awesome emulator is in the works now (A screenshot can be found on the website). A release should not be expected any time soon, although the latest DOS version should be made available pretty soon, so keep an eye out for any possible releases soon from the cool ZSNES team.

Subject: Win Emus
Can someone explain to me why there's been a recent conversion to windows emulators?
DOS emus have invariably been faster, and I've yet to see a Win emu that can beat its DOS version (exceptions apply to those that require windows for things like 3D acceleration, etc)
Is it Win2k that's forcing everyone to leave the tried-and-true DOS method for the slow and buggy windows method? (as I've heard that dos on win2k is exceedingly buggy)

It's quite simple I think. Windows offers a lot better compatibility with video/sound than you can do in DOS. It's much simpler to develop for a generic API and have the API take care of video optimizations and compatibility. Plus with faster processors, the speed differences aren't that noticeable if any.

ZSNES still has ancient sprite priority bugs, unfinished DSP1 and SuperFX emulation, Unplayable games (Captain America, anyone? How about Syutoko Battle?) We've got plenty to finish up before SNES emulation is as tight as, say...Sega Master System emulation. And even Meka, with it's 100% perfect SMS compatibility isn't considered finished. That better not be the reason.

We´ve lost Sardu and we lost all of the Raine team and we lost Ishmair and a lot of other people who left they name on the pages of the emu story and now loosing you would be fatal to me. What do you need? money? If so put your mail address on the zsnes page to send you stuff or anything, make the emu shareware or something but dont go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!

OverClocked respectfully offers a tasty pudding snack to any member of the zsnes team having doubts . .

aside, from that, zsnes win would be nice, especially if win2k compatible. There still isn't a windows snes emu that can bilinear filter (i.e. smooth) output using direct3d while running windowed . . and I think that would be schnazzy, as I could play Last Action Hero and it would look . . well, it would still look like sh!t, but really smooth sh!t, which is better than jaggy sh!t . . . never mind . .
