The Rumor Mill - October 18, '00 by JoseQ
Well, what can you expect after a huge weekend full of releases and a not so shy beginning for the week? A bag full of Rumors to fill up this edition of the Rumor Mill? You betcha! I've got some cool exclusives that many of you had been waiting for, and some of you even harrassed me about them on the EV Chat... you know who you are... Anyhow, a quick look into the bag reveals some cool pictures from HanaHo's research & development department, and even some yet unseen Final Burn screenshot. That's not all of course, so just jump in and read!
As Quinntesson was the first to release a Sega CD emulator, our friend who works on what came to be known as the "Mysterious Sega CD Emulator" has sheltered in an underground development layer! After entering what seems to be an unbreakable fortress for our spies, we managed to find a note he left for us about how things are currently looking. The groundwork for his standalone emulator has been completed, emulating both CPUs as well as being able to debug them, handle input, working video system and more. Apparently he's going to do some research under wraps so that we don't distract him any further. It may be a while before we hear back from this camp, but our eyes are still watching...
And speaking of Quinntesson and his first Sega CD supporting AGES, we did get a report about him just in time for the Mill. He's been found busy working on the bugs found that cause games to hang. At this stage of development and fixing, there's no schedule sheet in place for us to tell you when things will happen but just to let you know, the bugs are actively being worked on.
Continuing on the Rumor trail, I found a report on Mimic which has been tough to access during the past few weeks. There is one mirror working at http://www.arcadeheaven.com/mimic setup by Gareth so you can use that in the meantime. As for rumors, we've seen The Beaver working on the SMS aspect and the 32bit world using DJGPP and he seems quite happy as how Mimic is taking shape in the Windows world. We've also seen how painful his PC hassles are as I can definitely relate and know that there's very few things worse than a very unstable system. I wouldn't expect a release to occurr soon, or at least until the URL problems have been solved completely.
Stef from GENS played a prank on our spy this week. We found him playing Sega CD games very early in the morning, and they looked quite good and flawless. As soon as we noticed he was playing with a real Sega CD console, he turned around to us and said "Smile, you're on candid camera". So he did fooled us quite good, but as to not make us completely bad, he did mention a few things coming in the next version of his emulator. A Hard Reset option and new menu languages have been added (Portuguese, Hebrew and Italian). Good one Stef!
Some of you were probably wanting to see this new "Rail Chase" screenshot running on Final Burn right? Well, we managed to grab this one just for you. Here you go

Screenshot

Those with good eyesight will manage to see that the emulator version on that screenshot is 0.045, so expect to see that version number on the download page soon. Judging by Dave's work and our past experience, that would be 'very' soon.
I have to congratulate this agent as I think he did a great job. We managed to get those pics that you wanted from both the ArcadePC that looks like a Mini Ms Pac-Man cabinet, and from the sitdown cocktail / table cabinets! You will see that the Ms. Pac-Man ArcadePC has all the colors and shapes from the original and it does look appealing to the eye. Well, I won't talk much about them, just see for yourself!

Mini Ms. Pac-Man 1
Mini Ms. Pac-Man 2
Mini Ms. Pac-Man 3
Mini Ms. Pac-Man 4

Cocktail 1
Cocktail 2
Cocktail 3
Cocktail 4

Did he do a good job with the pictures or what? You can see them from all angles, and that's all you will need to convince your wife or husband that this is what you want for Christmas, Birthday or any other festivity where gifts are in turn. I for one love the three sets of controllers on the cocktail table for all kinds of possibilities.
Hey, did I mention that RockNES X works perfectly on my ArcadePC 33 cabinet? It's definitely the way to go right now on it since I have Windows 98 on that machine and nothing else. And for those that like this emulator as much as I do, I have some good news. You won't have to wait long for the next release to happen. It's coming this week! It fixes bugs, will most likely contain all the changes since the last version, and will take care of the nasty Windows 2000 bug which I'm happy about since that's what I have on my desk.
I did receive reports on other projects, but they were basically empty. I guess it was easy to expect such a thing after this weekend with 9 emulator releases. Come back next week, and we'll see how rumors are moving along. Thanks for reading, and until next time, Qmeister signs off!

Hello I am looking for some insight. I live near Toronto....Anyway I want a Cabinet for MAME and as quite a few games are vertical and some are horizontal i have decided to make it with a rotating screen.. I will likely use a 19 svga and mount a motor to it that will rotate it 90 degrees. I will use a gear reducer and a 12 vold dc motor like a power window motor...anyone else try this ? any assistance wuld be nice it will be in a standup i have access to anything i need :)

1) a keyboard/mouse panel is a must, and preferably on the side with the SE style controller.

2) As others have said, two buttons on each side of the vertical aspect sticks.

3) If possible, some sort of software (or hardware switch) that makes it work in both 2 player mode, where the vertical sides double the function of the horizontal side; and 4 player mode where each the horizontal side is player one and two, and the verticals are three and four. The latter would be useful for gauntlet and some konami games, assuming the vertical players are coordinated enough. ;-)

For the mini-"pacman" cab... an all black option is not as redundant as some might think; it would effectively be a mini-Galaga cab then.

Subject: Coctail Table and Hanaho
From: 206.86.40.84
While a coctail table is nice, I would much rather see a spinner or a trackball added to the controls. Most of the fun head-to-head coctail games used a trackball and/or a spinner. If I knew that Hanaho was actively working on new controls that would fit into this current coctail table, I would be more likely to purchase one. The fact that they say spinners and trackballs are not 'cost efficient' is kind of a lame argument. These are higher ticket items and I see no reason to think people won't pay a little extra for better controls. Most of the people I know that buy these things are nostalgia video game freaks in their 30s who can easily afford this stuff.

I also would like to see a trackball/spinner option. Does anyone know the projected cost for the cocktail model? I would be willing to pay quite a bit extra for these features. Anyone know the how soon the cocktail model will be available and a cost estimate?

this box is looking great so far.. my comment would be that maybe the table and controller area be larger around than the main box underneath, to me (6'3") the cab would be very uncomfortable to sit at. Like a desk your natural tendency would be to want to sit *under* the table and contorller area. All of the real cocktail cabs I remember were on a stand, that allowed your feet to be underneath. And besides a bit more room for the beer and the to sit while playing would be nice too :)

HanaHo you guys rule! keep it up, can't wait for that trackball

Only a day too late to make it into the official "Rumor Mill" so i am now adding one for myself...

Things are still quite busy in the SegaEMU world of Atani Software... Keep on the lookout for SegaEMU .55 in the next couple days... this will include more compatability for Genesis/MegaDrive games, will *NOT* have the SegaCD/MegaCD emulation enabled. I am still working on this and i do not want others to suffer through the partially working systems yet...

Be ready for the screenshots to be posted tomorrow on my site...

no x on the end (that's Sega's hugely under-supported Genesis add-on).

I think the state of play is that the System32 emulator development has slowed to a crawl with MAME being a more likely candidate, although not for a long time yet :(

Never played Rad Rally - I saw a 2-player cabinet once! Have played Rad Mobile and the great Outrunners though.

I notice that HAPP has a stick with
an optical wheel that might be able
to double for a spinner in some
situations. That wouldn't mess with
the standard HotRod layout either.

Note: A real spinner has gears and a
much higher sensitivity, but how much

Mmmmm....Cocktail table...

Here's my wish list...

Okay the side by side Sf2 6 button set up is top.. no improvements...

Side sockets as stated above need 3 buttons...

Somebody else mentioned customisable cabs where people can choose to buy side parts to snap into waiting sockets, to reduce cost of initial outlay... not if we could add to this, a rotating disc controller, for Arkanoid and penguin wars etc, and a trackball for missile command, Cabal, etc with the user being able to slot these in when needed...

Or even better... on the currently unsed back side of the cab..

Stick anotherwide control area, with a trackball, rotating disc, and three fire buttons...

We'd be able to play Gauntlet with the four sticks, single player Smash TV with the TWo joysticks, Hot rod, or similar multi player top down racing games...

Oh i could get carried away...

The Ultimate set up would have all four sides of the machine having at least one controller type, The double SF2 panel, Two single player joysticks and the final space reserved for trackball and rotary controller....

What are the chances????

Comments on the Coctail:
------------------------

1) Would like to have some leg room underneath the cabinet a little.

2) Would like to know if the current controls are easily replaceable (can I just lift them out and replace them).

3) Are you planning on releasing other controls we can replace the current ones with?

4) What does the inside of the cabinet look like??

5) Will there be a slide out panel for the mouse and keyboard? Which side will that be on?

Comments on the Pac Man Mini:
-----------------------------
Just one: The color scheme is horrid. Hopefully you plan to change the purple to yellow as well??

That cocktail arcadepc looks great BUT there's one apparent problem they need to fix before releasing it!

I noticed the vertical end controls only have one fire button on each side of the stick - that's NOT good enough! It should have 2 buttons IMO because one button won't be enough sometimes.

I agree with you and we will look into adding 2 buttons on each side of the joystick. We may have to make the panel area wider but it's a must do.

A minimum of three action buttons per control stick is a definate must on the cocktail.

Also if it would keep to cost of the cocktail down (I don't know how much it adds) but if it would not adversely affect production allowing people to choose which of the pannels to include would be nice.

As for the ms. pacman cabinet - two comments: while some poeople may llike the bright yellow colour I think other poeple might find a black cabinet more applealing and I would also assume it is going to be available with a Hotrod SE pannel instead of the one in the picture...

Overall though I love both of the new designs.

The team was, but there were some unexpected problems. Most notably,
the surprise game that was going to be added (Sonic Wings Limited)
has encrypted graphics ROMs :( :( :( However, music is now working

I didn't know that there were 'two' Psychic Forces...I purchased the 'Psychic Force 2012' this month for my Dreamcast when I found out it was being discontinued *Guess Impact made a sale for Capcom, eh?*...Impact *HOOKED* me on that game *first AND second version*... :)

Anyways, Is there a signifigcant hardware difference between the two games? I see the second board was dumped and I was curious as to what the 'real' version is like compared to the Dreamcast version *Which seems to be pretty good, at least compared to Psychic Force*

I tried Bobby Tribble's page but maybe I wasn't looking in the right area as I never found out any info...

I'd appreciate any info regarding the "Psychic Force" games...Was there only 2 of them?

Thanks.

Psychic Force 2012 uses the Taito Wolf board.
I can't remember what hardware the first game uses

>I'd appreciate any info regarding the "Psychic >Force" games...Was there only 2 of them?

Psychic Force 1 was ported to the PSX , Psychic Force 2012 was ported to the DC under it's origonal title, but was ported to PSX under the title Psychic Force 2 and was given a slick, but generic intro.

I've become something of a Psychic Force 2012 fanatic since i first played it in a japanese arcade a while ago.. i never really got into the first one though. I bought the japanese PF2012 the day it came out and i got my DC modded so i could play the american one when it came out as well.. *Sigh*

I may have to get my PS2 modded for Ring of Red when it comes out in the US as well.. different kind of game (Turn Based Strategy), but fun all the same ;)
