The Rumor Mill! - November 29, '00 by JoseQ
Howdy folks! It is time once again to post another edition of The Rumor Mill here at EmuViews! This edition is probably going to be shorter than the last few ones thanks to me being late gathering the agent reports, but nevertheless it brings good and interesting news for you. I have some news on SMOG, Raine32, DCGenerator, Meka, and some bits on RockNES, Final Burn, and AGES. Are you interested? Read on for the latest that I managed to dig up from the underground of what we all know as the Emulation Scene. Here we go!
I'm sure many of you were disheartened when you learned about the possible discontinuation of SMOG, the Sega Model 1 game emulator. However, I'm here to happily report that this project is back on track! We managed to copy a document the author received before he got his hands on it and it turned out to be the full V60 chip documentation, a major piece of the puzzle. The author has already incorporated some of the new details into his dissassembler and getting close to 100% accuracy, can you imagine? This emulator just got pumped the juice it needed to continue. I'll keep the agents active on that camp now!
How about some news from Raine32? Atani has been working on a script that converts GAS into NASM. This seems to be around 75% done. After that, he will be working on a front-end for this port of the very popular Raine emulator. And about DCGenerator coming from the same camp, we managed to catch news about it's first actual test. While not coming out with flying colors, it still shows promising results. Hopefully, we will have some screenshots to show next week!
On the MEKA front, registered users will be happy to know that they can expect an intermediate release to happen soon! That's all I got in the report, so those of you who are not registered might find now to be a good time to consider registering this wonderful SMS emulator.
Now the small bits I received about some of the other emulators we survey. AGES hasn't been touched since the last release since the author has been under a lot of school work. However, getting close to the end of the year means school semesters get to their end, leaving Quinntesson with good amounts of spare time to devote to his project during December and January. We'll definitely keep an eye for that.
Final Burn has also been without news for quite a while and our reports keep coming back thin with nothing to report. However, the info shows that the emulator is still alive, and Dave doesn't plan to quit on it just yet. So don't loose faith, this emulator is still with us!
And finally, I also received a confirmation report about the RocknesX release which will happen this Saturday, as scheduled. There's not much going on with this emulator other than that right now.
Well, as I said, this Rumor Mill was a bit thin, which was to be expected with the 4 day holiday weekend which started last Wednesday in the US, and the huge Holiday shopping season going on. I personally have a nice Christmas trip planned, but EmuViews will continue it's service as usual during that time, so don't you worry. I hope that next week I can have more juice for you. Until then, Qmeister signs off, and thanks for reading!

Hi, all, I am Ferrari Man. I have been following the SMOG project for a while, and got permission from TitoJ to port SMOG over to the Mac. If you wish, go to mac.emuscene.com, click on interviews and look under Ferrari Man. I am glad TitoJ got his V60 info, that means that MacSMOG (as it is called now)is still alive. In the meantime, until he finishes it, I am fooling around with the Virtua source and am considering a 32X emulator for the Mac. Anybody know where to find 32X tech docs and where the BIOS files are? Thank you.

Keep up the good work.

1 more thing: the screenshots there are both from a picture of them playing in the arcade machine and also of them running in the in progress emulator.

Yes but it is still in progress. Go to http://emustatus.rainemu.com for screenshots of Spider-Man, Sonic & Golden Axe. I don't know how many more games were emulated that might not have been reported. When you go there click on where it says Database. Other System 32 games are Rad Mobile/Gale Racer, Rad Rally, etc that you can see if you go to www.system16.com

Nowhere. That emu hasn't been touched for ages. Jose doesn't invent news. He just reports it.

Feel free to submit requests with full description and if possible examples (screen shots) of the feature in action that you are looking for. It is possible that maybe these kinda features could make it into the base codeset.

i'm really looking forward for RAINE32. I also hope that one of my favorit arcade games of my youth, RAD MOBIL, from SEGA, will soon be emulated. Great rumor mill, one of the best in quit a time, hope the emulation field keeps going like this for a long time. :)

Looking forward to Raine32 a lot :), and I was thinking, if system32 uses V60 like WTC says, would it be possible for the someone to make this document public so other developers can have a look and help/use it for other projects?
Personnaly I cant wait for a system 24 and the system32 emulators, especially for HotRod which I played to death when I was younger :), any news?....

I heard that the V60 chip had a lawsuit over it and they're not allowed to publicize it.

You can allways make a copy of the documentation as long as no one else knows about it.. =o)

Hey, this might not have been the beefiest Rumor Mill, but better to have a slim one with good news than a big one with bad news. Wow!! V60 documentation!!!!!! This is great!! A lot of the more sophisticated arcade games use it like System 32, SMOG and I think Virtua as well. I think Captain America & The Avengers uses it as well, so could this mean we could see some development on that? Congrats to all you guys working on that and to JoseQ to bringing us the good news.
