CPS-2 Progress! - December 15, '00 by JoseQ
Amazing news originating from the CPS-2 Shock website! If you visit their Work In Progress (WIP) page you will be glad to find out they have created a piece of software that is able to decode the "Street Fighter Zero" program ROM! While there still work left to be done before everything can be encrypted, this is already a huge step forward into getting CPS-2 emulated! This technique basically performs a brute force attack on the ROM and may take a long while to decode all of the 64K different addresses. Once that is completed, then the time it will take to get the system emulated might be trivial. We will see how this develops, but it certainly getting exciting! Hey, we had "After Burner" emulated on 2000, let's hope for us playing CPS-2 next year!

It has become painfully clear that Turbo Outrun and Buggy Boy have been emulated but do not work! Why the f**ck not? If they are encrypted then why not decrypt them? If people can emulate other games such as Outrun and Hot Rod then surley Turbo Outrun and Buggy Boy cant be that hard. Can it?

To all the guys working on MAME. I just wanted to say I respect what you guys are doing. The problem with these jerks today is they dont appreciate the beauty of a game that was made pre 1989. All they want is fancy graphics- thats it. I was there when it started and I was there to see the technological acheivements of great programers. If it wasnt for these old games we wouldnt be where we are today. Keep up the good work guys

To all the MAME programmers: stop wasting time with games pre 1989 and start helping out CPS2 shock-they really need it!Priorities come first. To the impact programmers, I don't expect much from you guys.(Why don't you quit whinin' and 'officially' release the 'impact2'AKA leaked beta.

Pre 1989 games, huh? So, acording to you, every single game before 1989 doesn't even deserve being emulated, right? Heck, then why the hell was MAME created anyway? Or NESticle? Or Stella?
Geez, man, do a favor to the world and kill yourself... better yet, give-me your address! I'll do it for you! :P

You guys must be suffering from premature emulation, so I understand your need to release some tension. But more importantly the name is correct!.

What happens to games that don't have an unprotected version? I read the reply of Malice above, but isn't that statement regarding to those games that have protected & unprotected versions? Just take a look at the Sega System 18 games and turbo outrun. How will games that have only a protected/encrypted version be emulated? I would like to know since I have a pcb that has protection that I would like to have dumped & emulated if possible.

Well there's not really anything that can happen
on games like Turbo Outrun unless someone figures
out how to decrypt the roms. But to bring some
perspective i didn't mean to say that having a
decrypted & encrypted set of roms is the only
way to figure out encryption but it is the
simplest from my understanding.

But i do think more people should look at
how CPS2 is being dealt with running custom
code on the arcade hardware is a very good way
to find unencrypted code or data to use as
a comparison against the encrypted roms.

No someone can figure out the encryption algorithm
once a good set of roms are decoded by comparing
the decrypted set against the encrypted one.
They can add that info to MAME just like other
games that have encrypted roms but still work on
MAME.

Where can I get cps2 roms besides Arcade @home, because it is too slow.?

I don't expect the cps2 emulator to be released in 2001. Maybe this time next year.

I think we could feasibly see some CPS2 games
emulated in 2001. After all wasn't CPS pretty
much the same hardware wise from what i've read
just CPS2 had encryption and the suicide chip.
