The Rumor Mill! - February 21, '01 by JoseQ
Wow, it seems I'm finally caught up with life. I sent out the notes to the Rumor birds on time, and I'm here in time to write the Rumor Mill before midnight on Wednesday. Anyhow, I know you're dying to know what's in store for the Mill tonight eh? Let's take a look in the bag. I have rumors from Ages, Gens, Bliss, RockNES, FreezeSMS, Genital and Smog. There's some goodies inside as usual, so be sure to read the whole thing!
Starting with Ages as mentioned above, I got word that Quinntesson has been devoting a lot of time to his .ASS invention. .ASS is basically a file format (Ages Save States) that Quinntesson is defining in hopes of having all Genesis emulators share them. That way, archives of .ASS's could be created, etc. The report I got says he's all too busy working on the .ASS. Also, it seems he has found a way to get the music track playing under Windows 2000. Other than that, he seems to be reading a lot of e-mail with suggestions and incorporating them into the emulator. Apparently, there's plenty of new features going into the next release that were suggested by fans of this emulator.
Moving along to another great Sega emulator, GENS. There's not much to report on this emulator, other than a very cool new feature under development. That is Four Player Support. While only two games work at the moment ("Street Racer" and "Yuyu Hakusho"), more are bound to work in the future. This was one of the coolest things about the Genesis, although I can't seem to remember a game that I played a lot with the Four Player adapter. I guess I'll do my research once this feature is implemented.
The Bliss report came up with usual stuff that you might already know. The author is still at work on the per-game configurable options, and Intellicart support. Those were mentioned in the Rumor Mill last week. He has also been caught working on bug-fixes and revisions based on the bugs you guys report on the Message boards. Apparently, there's something very juicy in the works that will start development after these two features are implemented. All we know is that it's juicy, so we'll keep an eye on that.
Last week, our RockNES spies were quite bored, as they had no actual RockNES info to dig. All they did was watch Fx3 get a new baby and play with it. Fx3 is now the proud owner of a Pentium III 800MHz machine. However, after setting up everything and being happy with it, development on RockNES has resumed, and it seems a release is targetted for this weekend, or possibly sooner! So keep an eye out for that. We have had a couple of unsuccesful attempts at placing Rumor birds near the RockNESX author, but we'll try to get that going soon... Until then, no word on RockNESX updates.
About FreezeSMS, all we know is that work on the 'secret' feature continues. We haven't managed yet to uncover what it is, but it seems that within a week or two we might have something to show you guys. The author seems to be too careful with his work, but he'll slip somehow, and we'll be there to catch him in the act, and put it in the Mill.
Coming back to Genesis emulators, Genital has been making some good progress as well, getting a few 'picky' games working now, although currently "Streets of Rage 2" is not working. This is an 'unacceptable' problem for Bart, so there won't be a release until that and other things are fixed. You can expect cool games like "Herzog Zwei" and the 'Strike' series to work with the next release.
And moving along the Sega emulator chain, this time it is SMOG's turn. Remember last week that I mentioned that some of the "Virtua Racing" sound was becoming a reality? Well, we invested in some sound capturing equipment, and we have the first ever emulated sound tracks from "Virtua Racing" to prove it! Here's some mp3 files exclusively for your enjoyment:

Virtua Racing mp3 1
Virtua Racing mp3 2
Virtua Racing mp3 3
Virtua Racing mp3 4
Virtua Racing mp3 5
Virtua Racing mp3 6

Well, that's all I have in the bag for the Rumor Mill this week. I hope you enjoyed reading it! Until next week, Qmeister signs of and All Your Base Are Belong To Us!

At least one of the Gauntlet games, as well.

Impact only emulates Player 1's controls. You cannot use 2 of anything with it.
