| The Rumor Mill! - March 21, '01 by JoseQ
| Well, it seems we're all going through some tough times. The tech market is suffering, emulation news are hard to find, and so are the rumors! However, I did manage to snatch a few reports for you to enjoy. This is probably (and hopefully) the shorted Rumor Mill you'll ever read, and I'm not even sure if I should post it, but the FPSE screenshots I got are so good that you have to see them. Plus I did get some news on the Sega Arcade Project which many of you are thirsty for. And last but not least, a small report on GENS. So let's get right onto it!
Looking into FPSE, our initial reports signaled that there were no news to report. But almost at the last minute, a report flew in with two screen captures of FPSE 0.09 beta in action! The screenshots were taken using the interpreter mode with Pete's Plug-in. The name of the game is "Fear Effect 2" and here are the screenshots:

Impressive, eh? We also got word that there's no planned release date for FPSE as of yet.
The small GENS report is mostly a continuation from what we gathered last week. Stéphane continues his work on the YM2612 rewrite which is producing sound, although still not in the good quality range. Sadly, the author will be going into exams next week, so the project will be on hold in the meantime.
As far as the Sega Arcade Project goes, there's plenty of good news surrounding this project. Phil Stroffolino, of MAMEDEV fame (InterViewed here more than a year ago) has joined the project, since he was already working on a MAME driver for "Sega Monaco GP". The preliminary has been tons of help to Mickey as he continues development. In a very interesting move, his emulator may feature Internet High Score Saving (a'la Kablooey!) since Mickey liked it so much (as did I). This is definitely a feature that adds to the replayability of any game, and with the proper encryption, it'd be nice to see it in more and more emulation projects don't you think?

Don't worry, things will get better eventually. If you have been in this scene you know what happened in 98-99 with Dave's Classics. It seems everything went sour after roms sites have been removing roms/closing down. Same story back then. Those roms sites have a big impact, especially those with unemulated roms since they provide emu developers with games to work on. With a scarcity that is seen now, it won't be as easy for new emu programmers to enter the scene. Let's hope things go back to the way they were soon. Maybe by late summer the ISP's will forget about the Napster decision and will revert to their old ways.

I remember those times myself. Usually the course of action is that the companies get all pissant and start trying to yank rom sites. Then when things calm down, new rom sites spring up in their places, or old sites come back.. It's really the theory of the evolution of the emulation community where you start, you get killed, you start again... Either that, or some people are just pissy. :-)

Well, after mame.dk and emuviews shut down, I've gone back to where I started my collection from: IRC. When davesclassics shut down their complete collection, I went back to IRC too (after days of weeping).
There are TONS of great FSERVES available on newnet - #ROMS4FREE is the best, with COMPLETE collections of mame b13, TOSEC, Raine, etc..., and things are going even stronger there with the recent WWW shut downs. What's great about IRC is that these channels CANNOT be shut down. It's like the whole Napster issue; if you can't use the Napster servers, just use Napigator to connect to the www.musiccity.com servers. They're running strong and they're not under attack from ANY music corporations. The ROM's are out there, the developers are out there, and there's always an underground scene going on. This whole situation just makes it a lot tougher for newbies to get their unwashed hands on the retrogames they're looking for.
