| GAME OVER - July 13, '01 by JoseQ
| Well guys, I think this is it. As you may have noted, this week has been incredibly slow for news postings here, and not because of lack of time, but rather because of lack of interest. It seems my time in emulation has passed. There's probably not a single game I played, or even saw, that isn't emulated already, and those that are not emulated, I still have available for me to play. For that reason, there's not much excitement in the emulation scene for me these days. This in no way means that the emulation scene is dying, but probably the oppossite. Of the years that I spent following the emulation scene, I think the emulation scene is strongest now. It's a rare time when you see this many projects going on at the same time. My emulation bookmarks list is longer than ever, and I believe it will continue to grow, albeit more into a console gaming oriented scene, rather than arcade.
During the time that I ran EmuViews, I had the great pleasure of meeting some of the coolest people, and I intend to thank them all, but as I'm human, I'm bound to forget a few people, so if I do, please forgive me, I'm still appreciative to anyone that ever contributed a grain of sand to the emulation scene. So here are my 'Thank You's in no particular order:
OrG and araCorn - for ROMLIST, one of the greatest ROM dumping sites, if not the greatest, for a long time.
Thierry Lescot - for System16 and numerous other contributions, mostly related to Sega, my favorite software company.
Li Jih Wah - For M72, another great emulator at the time when it came out.
Nicola Salmoria - For his awesome dedication to the greatest emulation project in history, and having a cool understanding of the emulation scene.
MAMEDEV - For MAME, need I say more? In particular, I'd like to thank Frank Palazzolo, Alex Pasadyn, Paul Leaman, Phil Stroffolino, Bryan McPhail, Mirko Buffoni, Mike Balfour and Ernesto Corvi, all of which I had the pleasure of InterViewing.
Neil Bradley - For Retrocade, MZ80 and numerous long/enjoyable ICQ/IRC/e-mail conversations.
Retrocade Dev - For Retrocade, the neatest arcade emulator in my opinion.
Larry Bank - For CAGE, HiVE, Arcade Pack and also very cool conversations over AIM, and at E3.
Dave - Obviously for Final Burn, which brought to life the last few games I wanted to see emulated, "After Burner" and "Power Drift". Also DTMNT and DGen!
Antiriad (Richard Bush) - For Raine, one of the greatest emulators ever to exist. And for cool conversations over ICQ. Thanks to Emmanuel , for keeping it alive.
Dan Boris - For v7800 and his work on MESS among many other projects. Also very interesting conversations over e-mail and IRC.
Atila of Retrogames - For his funny attitude always, keeping his cool, and teaching me how to get your own domain name ;).
Lev of Emulation World - For Emulation World of course, which allowed emulation sites to exist freely. Without it, I'm not sure if the emulation scene would have that many websites.
MESSDEV - For MESS, the biggest console/computer emulator in existence.
Ben of MESSDEV - For reviving MESS and taking on the hard task of administering it.
Norbert Kehrer - For JAE and ONE, very cool Java emulators that run in your browser.
Kyle Davis - For Bliss, the best Intellivision emulator out there.
Janne and Anders - For RAGE & NeoRAGE, incredible emulators of their time.
Stef - For GENS, one of the best, if not the best, Genesis emulator out there.
Sardu - For Nesticle, which some consider the best NES emulator after all these years.
JROK - For JAS emulator, which triggered one of the very first news postings I ever made to this site.
Carl-Henrik Skårstedt - For the Dead Serious clan, Shark, and Toaplan.com, an extensive description of Toaplan games. Thanks to Magnus Danielson as well.
Fx3 - For RockNES, my currently favorite NES emulator.
TNSe - For NESten, my favorite NES emulator for a while.
Jamsponge - For HU6280, a very cool PC Engine emulator.
Bart Trzynadlowski- For Genital and Genital68K.
John Saeger - For Z26, the coolest Atari2600 emulator.
Barry Rodewald - For QPlayer and GalEmu.
Atani - For his numerous cool projects and cool chats.
Richard Bannister - For an infinite number of Macintosh ports of every emulator he could get his hands on.
Rasky - For PSyKe, and very funny conversations on IRC and over e-mail.
Duddie & Tratax - For PSEmu and cool times over ICQ/IRC.
Matt Conte - For Nofrendo.
Charles Bilyue - For SNEeSe.
Jerremy Koot and Gary - For SNES9x.
zsKnight & _Demo_ - For ZSNES.
Quinntesson - For AGES.
RealityMan & Epsilon- - For UltraHLE.
Shane Monroe - For Insert Coin, Monroe World, and his Amiga sites, and being a cool friend.
Zoop - for MEKA, SMS Power and numerous funny conversations over IRC and e-mail.
Dirk Stevens - For RetroFX, even though the project never made it out, I did enjoy being part of the team for some time, and trying to contribute. Also thanks for the Eagle engine.
TmB - For EmuVerse and cool chats on IRC.
GuruChoc - For Arcade Heaven and numerous chats on IRC.
Conway Ho & Richard Ragon - For HanaHo's Hot Rod.
Mike Beaver - For Mimic.
Jim Pragit - For EmuNews.
Spike - For Handy.
The Fox - For Emulators Unlimited and a few nice fewds when bleem! was first announced.
Randy - For bleem! and interesting and funny conversations over e-mail.
rcp - For KIAME/U64 Emulator.
John den Hartog - For Atmospherical Heights.
Mike Green - For EmuDX.
Zeograd - For Hu-Go and other PC Engine related projects.
Charles MacDonald - For numerous contributions to the scene, and continuing to do so. His site.
Peter Dalton and bwb - For Emulation HQ.
The ReView Staff @ EmuViews- For the 250+ ReViews found on this site. This includes Womp, EazyCheeze, Bman2, Jellodyne, Nightbird, Maddog, Mr.T, Snoopy, Shadow Lord, Finn, ArticCat, TwinBee, Sungam, Jon, Mr. Morden, Max Diablo, Dirk Stevens, Bifordus Maximus, Dorsola, CupCakus, SkiBum, Ice Knight, Personan, Haze, D@Z, Jet Set Radio DJ, WinZippy, -^Cro§Bow^- and Kurgan. Thanks much you guys!
To my Spy Birds - Thanks for all the rumors! Without you, the Rumor Mill would have never existed. You know who you are!
I'd also like to thank some people I got the pleasure of meeting thanks to being part of the emulation scene: Paul101, KidHype, TheKorn, DJJeremy, Xta-C, paranoid, EDGAR, Chrono, comatose, otaking, anticupid, D@Z, kotatsuneko, -^Cro§Bow^-, Dorsola, SAV2880, Bman2, personan, neill, whacker, Opi, Dave (c0njurer), Ron Corcoran, Walter Day, metallik, Cowering, TonyD, jandaman, Zophar, PTS, Logiqx, x68k, Daemon, Dark Mazda, Sharon, Trojan, and Lance_MC. Although I'm sure I'm forgetting some people, I hope I covered the majority of them. One I can't seem to remember is the site where I found MAME ROMs for the first time and got me into emulation. I bet I'll remember as soon as I post this.
Anyhow, that is it. Thank you all for visiting for the past three years, you made the site what it was, and still is, my dream come true. As promised, I'll leave the site online for those interested in the game ReViews, author InterViews, game ratings, profiles and the such. There's also a good archive of old emulators in the Emulator Download section, and that will stay online. And there's also the EmuViews Chat, which I will frequent as usual. I may have to take the site offline from time to time, but it'll always be back up eventually. Once again, thanks for visiting, and thanks for reading!
One Article Up: -^Cro§Bow^- pumps a new ReView! One Article Down: Kawaks 1.10!

I love playing mame roms, endless fun in finding new oldie classics that have actual playability! Not like these new fangled 3d types. Bring it on I say. BTW my fave is Bubble Bobble, oh no, hang on, it's mr. do... or is it street fighter 2, oh hell I dunno.

NEVER and I mean NEVER!!!!!!!!! Give away ROMS for systems less than 10 years old. I think Emuviews was more of a piracy site than anything else....so in someway its good to see it closed.
There is only two things I will miss: The Commodore 64 section and the NES section........Arcades can pretty much go to hell cause I never liked the things anyway (Arcades stink of truck drivers and junky gangsters).

im bored so i'll reply to this..
number one: the roms have been off this site for like six months or more before the site went down.
number two: if you knew anything at all about this sites purpose or jose himself you would know that it/he has/had Nothing to do with piracy. The site was about preservation.. why do you think he had a rating system for each game and sometimes descriptions or reviews. if he was here to pirate the site would look similiar to most 'rom' sites..
number three: it's either because of kiddies who "Want their roms" or iggnorant people "Speaking their mind" that helped Jose make his decision about closing shop. I think everyone should speak their mind, just research a little and make sure your words are worth the read.

You are a fucking idiot. The system is completely irrelevant. ROMs are morally acceptable as long as the game is no longer in production by the company. If the company is no longer producing the game, the company can no longer sell the game, and downloading the ROM image of the game does nothing to hurt the company. Think before you write.

As tears Go By
(Mick Jagger and Keith Richards\The Rolling Stones)
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch as tears go by
My riches can’t buy everything
I want to hear the children sing
All I hear is the sound
Of rain falling on the ground
I sit and watch as tears go by
It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Doing things I used to do
They think of you
I sit and watch as tears go by

|
The problem with emulation began when it became "the scene" as in the movie "scene" or the books "scene" and as you can see everything starts to smell like a dead cat when people starts calling it "the scene".
When emulation started it was fun, I had fun, everyone had fun. Why? Because most of us came from having authentic and true fun with Commodores, Amigas, Speccys, ST´s, etc. And those computers created an enviroment of fun, not of 14 year olds thinking they were superstars or something, but authentic real fun. Anyway, after Windows fucked everything good and really fun and Bill Gates ruined our lives by making windows almost mandatory if you want to work with your machine and reach compatibility with most peoples computers.....well....there is no fun anymore....but we can still have fun, as long as we know that emulation is for fun and not to please multinational behaviour.
If some Microsoft worker is reading this...look at my hand:

Don't GO!!! You are one of the sites I kept coming back to religiously for years after I discovered arcade emulation. Thanks to you, I've relived many fond memories of one of the passions of my teen years. I'm glad to see you are reconsidering posting the ROM archive again (re: the Poll). I would hate to lose another good source what ith EMUX.com falling off the face of the earth and Arcade At Home next to impossible to get a download from. The only other reliable source left from my original favorites is ClassicGaming.com.
Please don't go. It's hard to express in words the feelings & memories that have been rekindled just by simply listening to a video game soound effect or see a particular scene. I really love passing this enjoyment on to my kids too.
Thanks to you I've been able to grab and hold onto a piece of my childhood that otherwise might have been reduced to a fading memory over time.
Bring back the ROMS. Please stay on line!

Hi, i just came to your site and I saw that is something big, but as you said "There's no interest anymore", but you should check what has been wrong.
In Spain, South America & Mexico, and France, the Emulation is something great, Maybe you should promote yourself in those sites that are really big as www.emulatronia.com, http://talfiworld.metropoli2000.net, and others
There are several people who is ansious for everything related to the emulation.
You Should Think about it

So many years ago. So many good friends that run the life's race in other fields. I used to waste the money I had to buy a sandwich at school playing at Galaxians, 20 years ago. Playing again this and a lot of others made me remenber these happy days. Cause we loved it and this now "silly" games are parts of our lifes forever. Thanks for love them and for make us love them a little more. Now I can show my son what I play when I was a child, and I own you and others who worked hard to make the emu world alive.
Gracias, amigo. Siempre estarás en el recuerdo, junto con aquellas máquinas, unidas inseparablemente a aquellos maravillosos años. Gracias.

Man, I found out about emulators and roms by accident about five years ago, and ever since then your site has been the bomb!!! Once, twice...ten times a month over the years I would visit your site. It has been the best (hands down) by far for many emulators and roms. I guess it's back to that top 50 crap that I would visit by accident from time to time, and those b.s. advertising and broken link sites that get nothing accomplished. You da'man Jose, and I want to say thanks...you have been my favorite site over the last couple years (and those porn one's too). And whats up with all the other sites lately, you can't get any NES, SNES, SEGA, ETC... roms. Something about the game makers being pissed off? Luckily I burned all my stuff before I had to re-format my hard drive. Emulation will never die. Peace Out, Train Runner

Jose,
I am an enormous fan of your site. I'm sure I am one of the thousands of anonymous people that browse your site and never tell you how truely unique and awesome it is. I have been a part of the emulation scence for nearly 6 years. In all of that time, I have seen many sites come and go. But none, not a single one, was nearly as awesome as yours. Your site is well designed and kept very much up-to-date. Since finding it, I considered your site to be the-place-to-go for up-to-the-minute information about the emulation scene. I am TRUELY going to miss your site. As I am sure many have already said, please reconsider. Perhaps there is some alternative way for the site to stay alive. Perhaps some of us, your readers, could be operators of your site. I wish there was a way... I will always remember your site and will forever hold all other sites that I find to your standard.
Yours Truly,

Jose....... I must say that over the last couple years i would frequent your site about once a month to catch up on all the happenings and releases throughout the previous month and was totally DEVASTATED when i popped on a week after you had stopped hosting the roms online. I must go on record as saying that like most things in life, you dont know what you've got....till its gone...... :(
I would like to take a moment to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the time and effort you have put into this site over the last 3 years! I had always thought your site stood out from the rest of the crowd (and yes, we all know its pretty darn crowded out there. lol) from your great contests for the hot rod, to the kewl as heck rumor mill (which was always my personal favorite by the way)and to the AWESOME selection of roms you had always hosted. Your site in my oppinion was second to NONE. The color layout was catchy and pleasing to the eye and all the functions you had added over time, such as the chat forums and game reviews, etc. took alot of time and energy on your part and all of us out here in game land who truly live for playing all those KICK AZZ arcade games from our younger days TRULY TRULY appreciate YOU! BUT........sadly.....seasons do change and it seems life has taken you away from us to bigger better dreams. I am VERY happy your dreams came true in the aspect of your life and i pray you have many more that come true for you! Your site will always be remembered by me as one of the ELITE and best out there!
Good journey my friend and may life treat you as well as you have treated all of us!
yours truly,

Hehe, I don't blame you. I've been playing emulators since I found Sparcade, (I saw c64 emulators before that, but arcade machines were a whole other world) but I never remotely considered creating a webpage about it, let alone a site on the level of Emuviews. I can't imagine how much time you musta spent on this site, especially with all those icons! As I collect mame roms, I realize if I were you I woulda quit not long after mame hit .30! :-)

Wally

Emulation is strong, but there aren't any real good sites covering it, other than this one. I hate to say it, but with all of those cheesy banner ads, and popup ads, Dave's Video Game Classics (Vintage Gaming) isn't what it used to be. Now with Emuviews gone, I don't know where to go. I think it is a big blow to emulation for JoseQ to quit.
Please reconsider.

Where will we get our weekly sneak peek at what is happening in the world of emulation?
Where will we find roms that work?
Where will we come to relive the memories of our youth, safe in the knowledge the hosting site really loves its content and is not just a face for making money.
What will Jose Q do with all his spare time?
What will we do with ours, now the articles we love to read so much are taken from us.
Why do all good things have to come to an end?
P.S Jose, between you and Jim Pragit you had it all covered for us. Jim's gone (albeit a while now), and now you. It is a sad sad time in the Emulation scene - if someone were to release a 100% working DC Emulator, at the moment I doubt it would rise a weary smile from our lips.
I hope I speak for most most when I say you have our upmost respect and best wishes for anything you undertake.
We love ya Jose. Cya around

Jose, did you mention a lot of people that helped the emulation grow stronger thru he last three years. But you forgot one: JoseQ. This guy was responsible by keep the BEST emu HP of all times until now. No kidding. Nobody offered such availability of so many emulators AND roms; nobody promoted so many construtive discussions and interviews. All of that just only can be fruit of the work of a very honest and friendly guy. And tha man don't earned a penny after all! I guess u find the enough for emu - very few people were so goodhearted in anytime. Thanx, thanx and thanx and still wasn't enough. We hope some day u find renewed interest in emu again. Until there, so long, and take care of yourself and your family - good luck. And I'm very sorry for the huge ammount of grammar mistakes in my messages! ;)
PS: While today we have a plethora of emulators, there's a lack of good websites about the theme!

But there will always be ways to hack leeching motherfuckers and send them to hell and Romdumpers should only give roms to emu developers to avoid persons like this fag telling us in a sinical way that he is a rom leecher.

The people who started all this emulation deal where guys from the eighties who grew up watching the Smurfs and the Transformers, and playing Commodore computers. THEY ARE GETTING OLD and everyone here should dig it once and for all. This gaming stuff bores them a depresses them because the computer lifestyle is not as underground and exciting as it used to. Today things are done in a commercial way, and if you want to use the internet you are gonna have to pay for it honey, and someone is going to watch your back even if you use the most ingenious tricks to avoid them. This is NOT about hackers or any other cheesy movie characters, this is about the loss of fun in a lifestyle "real" computer users (not kids or grown idiots using AOL and using Napster because they think it will end imperialism....hahahaha..HAHAHAHAHA...yeah right as if they know what the fuck iomperialism is they think hotmail is an underground free e-mail movement trying to free some African country) used to enjoy.
Emulation is not going to dissappear, it just might take a little nap and then JoseQ Jr. will think: Wow, my dad had this very cool site about this things called emulators, I think I´ll continue his HOBBIE just for the fun of it, Wow, Pac-Man rocks!!!! And what the heck is this X-BOX emu this Sardu fellow just finished developing?????? He is so freaking old, but an excelent master of coding anyway.

Farewell and all the best for the future. Playing Carnival and Pacman once more was a joy, but it was also a real downer when I relised how old the games are and me !!! They also brought back some good memories :)
Emuviews was a well made site which didnt piss us about like other rom sites. Other ROM sites take notes before it disappears.

I just want to thank you for doing the site for so many years.
I think I know a bit how you feel, I remember the excitement when MAME passed the 100 game milestone and how great it was to play Pacman, Bubble Bobble, Bomb Jack and Galaga on my 586 100mhz... Then came RAINE and RAGE and CALLUS and NESTICLE :-) btw. CALLUS ran fine in the 586!
It just isn't the same anymore when a new MAME is released :-(
One again, a THANK YOU VERY MUCH from me here in Denmark.

Emulation is simply going back to its roots. The glass with water and sand had been shaken for sometime but now it has been left on the table, peacefuly and quietly. The sand will go back to the bottom of the glass and emulation will go back to what it used to, the begining, but with all the new circumstances that are a reality in the present days. I am sure Sardu will comeback as predicted in many profecies, but probably in the form of "another", the reincarnation of Sardu who will astonish all of our miserable lifes with his amazing and unpecable coding skills. Marat Fayzulin will deliver the product of his legacy and "his son" will finaly come to enlighten our minds and spirits. There is a light, roms will finaly be managed in a responsible and thoughtful way and the profecy will begin, the profecy of a world of classic games and true videogame art. When the Moon gets in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then Steve Snake will show us again what the meaning of good and amazing coding is. The Age of Callus came to a tragic end, the emux.com died and the emuviews.com was our prophet in this difficult times, but his job is done. A new age is begining and emulation will go back to its roots. The name of our martir "JoseQ" will live in our hearts forever and we will wait for the new prophet, a programmer with the wisdom ancient days, a prophet who knows that the Commodore 64 kicked major ass and that the Amiga is the best computer you can still get today. Teenagers will be too intimidated by the power of emulation and N64 emus will have to wait 10 to 20 years to be developed any further. The time is ours, and the Time is NOW!!!!!!!!

Your site had soul, opinions and never hesitated to voice them. I, like a lot of us, looked to your site for reviews and opinions (You know, on varios emulators, games etc.). I for one (of millions) will miss your efforts. - Thanks again!

Hey JoseQ, please don't go!Just because news aren't so frequent doesn't mean you aren't important anymore. Your time hasn't passed. You've done a great job over the last 3 years, and you're still doing a great job. I think it would be a shame for you to quit now.
Besides, this year has enough emulation tragedies, from Dave quitting to mame.dk being shut down for some time. We really don't need another!
If you have to leave anyway, I wish you all the best, and thank you for all the fond memories. It was your site that got me into emulation in the first place, and though there are many other sites, yours will have a special place in my memory.

Why do only the great sites die. First Dave went offline due to potential lawsuits, now the legendary JoseQ. I must say that I have enjoyed reliving my adolescence, playing awesome games like Wonder Boy and Shinobi. The latest PS1 and PS2 games and the like have nothing over the old arcade games. I have to agree that just about everything worth emulated has been done. Nothing, and i mean nothing, will replace the local Timezone or AMF bowling alley - although MAME at least lets us play. Good luck Jose from some of your most dedicated supporters in Australia.

Well said Willow, EmuViews first introduced me to Mame and the emu world. I like many others have had been emerrsed in nostalgia, being thrown back in time to a land of milk bars and the ol' Upright and cocktail arcade games. I can almost hear the oil sizzling while I'm playing Dig Dug, waiting for my .80c worth of chips to cook. Thanks JoseQ for my wonderful trip down memory lane (still undefeated by the way at Dig Dug at the old Glenorie TakeAway). Goodluck.

Not only is Emuviews dead, but zsKnight has just quit the ZSNES team because his father just passed away, and he will not be able to maintain ZSNES, as he must now provide for his family and see his way through the last two years of universities. zsKnight, if you are reading this, I send you my deepest condolences, and I wish you good luck in all of your future endeavours. Your dedication to achieving perfect SNES emulation at a usable speed for virtually anyone, and your countless hours of heart have added a lot to the emulation community, and they do not go unapperciated. While your ZSNES project will live on, it will lose its creator, its leader, and its inspiration. From the depths of my heart I pray for you and for your father, and I am sure that everyone else in the community will join me.
Sincerely,
Sephirstein

My prayers are also with zsKnight, his father and his family. I wish him luck in everything he does in the future.
I am not a big fan of the SNES (I am a Genesis militant since 1990) but his presence in the emulation scene comes from the days when everything was exciting and realy dangerous. zsKnight is definetly a hero and he goes with the honors of a warrior who deserves all our respect and admiration, definetly a true hero of emulation. (I have never used ZSNES, I guess I`ll give it a try in his honor).

"This in no way means that the emulation scene is dying" BULLSHIT. It's time for a dose of reality here. Rom sites are dropping like flies and anyone not totally smoked up can see that. You say that the emulation scene isn't "exciting" anymore. Well I agree, but that is only because the people making things happen in the emulation scene, the people that run emulation sites & emulator authors and dumpers, don't have any balls. They are all afraid of getting sued by the big game companies. If everyone in the emulation scene would have used just a little common sense and concentrated on bringing emulation to only dead systems and then not worrying about lame threats from game companies. (most of those threats came from lamers just pretending to be Nintendo or something just for a joke) There is still tons of unemulated console and arcade games that are no longer for sale. Right now most everything out there is safe, as the N-64 is getting replaced, so there is hundreds of games, ready for emulation, and the playstation emulators don't hurt anyone, and actually HELPS Sony, cause you have to actually buy the game to play it on a computer. The only real ILLEGAL roms now are the Gameboy Advance roms and any arcade rom from a machine still being used in the arcades, which I don't think there are many. The emulation scene would still be exciting if we had websites like this one run by people that wouldn't be afraid to post these older roms and encourage development of emulators and programming tools. This site has been my start page on my browser for years, then after the roms got pulled, the only people hanging out in here was the "moral lamers"...fools that just talked about emulators and ran Dave off the scene and pounced on anyone that asked for roms on the message boards. Think about it.. Anyone that visits these rooms has a one time or another looked for a rom online and asked that same question. If you don't want or need roms, then why the hell are you here? I would wager that these same lamers are the ones that e-mail site owners and pretend to be some game company with a threat to sue if roms arent pulled, just for kicks. So , bottom line, if we had a few dozen emulator sites ran by people with the balls to ignore crap like this, and would run emulator news along with the older roms, and encourage & host emulator authors, while shuting out lamers and whiners, then the emulation scene would be exciting enough for anyone, the games would be comming out as fast as we could play them, and the scene wouldn't die out due to cowardace and stupidity.

Balls for hosting ROMs?
These days you need balls and tons of cash. If you have both, go for it! You know, you should really put your 'balls' where your mouth is. Stop talking, and start doing.

I realize the cost of posting roms. Thats why I have always clicked on the banners on this site in support of what you were doing. I never meant to suggest that any one site could host ALL the roms out there, that would be impossible. I would post as many as I could, depending on the earnings from the ad banners. I'm not ragging on this site, I was refering to the emulation scene in general. If every emulation site pulls their roms, then what is left?? Like I said, this site has been my start page for years and I thank you for what you have done for the scene.

A scene much like when this one begun. Hardcore emulator authors, which usually can find means of getting the ROMs, will develop emulators. Users will find the ROMs through unusual channels. ROMs haven't always been as widely available as they were say 6 or 9 months ago. Before that, they were quite hard to find as well. But there will always be ways of finding them. Just not as easily.
Sadly, banner advertisement cannot hold any site up. If you want to have a site up these days, you're going to have to rely on donations, and/or your own money.

I agree in most parts. I never really understood why it is such a big crime to ask for a link to roms on a messageboard. It can't be because it is illegal because I bet everybody that flamed 'rom-beggers' illegally owns a large collection of roms. I once tried to get some encrypted ROMs to have try at breaking encryption, but you wouldn't believe the harsh language I had to put up with sometimes! Some people seem to get angy when they only see the word 'ROM' in a messageboard and immediately start flaming while being just a hypocrit. I think when I release my own little emu for download (they're now all applets), I will include the ROMs. Any emulator (or rather the whole 'scene') is encouragement to download illegal roms anyway so why not make it easy and include them in the distribution? And the old ones are not very illegal really...

Well, it seems that this site (news,
rumor mills, etc) are all done, but
thanks a lot for your great dedication
put into it all these years. This site
was one of a kind in that it gave news
and important aspects of emulation in a
timely manner. Other sites report every
little thing and it's a pain to sort
through news based on developments with
all the other stuff there. Plus the
rumor mills gave us all an idea of what
was to come (like those Afterburner
shots last year). Thanks again for your
time, effort & dedication JoseQ, & enjoy
your long deserved rest.

JoseQ, thankyou for the incredible contribution you made.. emulation sites can only be inspired by the polish and flair that emuviews always had.
And what about reviews?
Half the sites were just "here's the latest version of Playstation Pirate 1.065x with the following changes.. blah blah blah"....
But emuviews actually reviewed classic games, so you could discover gems you missed the first time around.
JoseQ, thankyou is not enough, but let's hope this is one of many posts, to illustrate the number of people who appreciate your efforts.

Mucha suerte en todo lo que emprendas a partir de ahora.

Nononononono... It's just a few months ago when I was browsing for circuits for building my own joysticks. I accidentally stumbled over something called MAME. I tried it out and couldn't believe my eyes! All the ancient Arcade games I adored in the early eighties came back to life. I got re-infected at once and built my own original Arcade joystick. All the modern games inflated with nonsense became pale compared to those lovely oldies that scored from their direct playability coded in ridiculous 10kB. Then I looked for comprehensive emu support and finally discovered JoseQ's. Excellent assortment, excellent descriptions, excellent user interface, excellent everything. And now...
Thank you very much for your great work!
Is there any way to convince you of proceeding?

When I went to download a game about a couple of weeks ago i thought something was wrong with my ISP when it didnt give me tho option to download the game. I did everything to figure this out. Even though I do not know you personally or have ever talked to you. I feel this way because I know that it takes a lot to do what you have done for the last 3 years. I know I feel like this because of the era that you have set up your site, friendly, easy to use. I can feel your devotion in this site by the way you took your time to set it up, and make this perfect site that you've created. This is from deep in my heart and I promise you is so true. I'm taking my memories with me that you've given me back.

Then allow me to say an heartly "goodbye and good luck" to you JoseQ. I am an 27 years old man that was really pleased from all the infos I got from your site (and some roms, too... I'll be honest!)... I follow the emulation scene since quite a lot, and always liked retrogaming. In this ever-changing scene, your site twinkled like a shining star, who has now become a shooting one... Damn... I am out of words, and can't really express my thanks and gratitude for all your fine work, but I can surely tell you a thing: you will be missed.

Why is it every time I leave for a week or 2, another good emu site goes "bye-bye"?? I gotta qiut leavin'!!
Anyway, it's sad to see this place go... It's the only site so far where the gamers actually have a brain, and know what they're talking about. (that's a compliment, before you guys start flaming the hell outta me.)

Bye and thanks JoseQ. Please keep us informed about your future projects.
And if you want to know how bad I feel, listen to the "Lena´s theme" song from FF5.
You will just feel how sad everyone is.

Actualy now that I think of it, emulation has lost the only news site mantainer that NEVER gave me the impretion of being a well-fed\momma-clean-ass kinda person.
JoseQ was actualy cool in a special way.....emulation news will never be as funn and complete as JoseQ was capable of bringing them.
So...is this the end of emulation?
I can bet my f$cking ass it is.....at least as a matter that is taken seariously. For now on emulation news sites will be managed by drooling babyes who dont even understand the importance of emulation and all that it actualy means.
This site wasn´t only the news, it was JoseQ´s attitude towards emulation and that he actualy knew what the hell he was doing.
F$ck emulation, without JoseQ I will feel like a stupid baby playing free games, not like a person interested in the video game art of the past, not like someone doing something searious.
First emux.com, and then this................this is simply not humane, it can´t be real.

It's been three years since I first discovered this awesome site, it seems to be a week. Well, I hope you will not completely disappear (see ya on retrogames?), and I wish good luck for your future projects.

Generally I don't post to your forum, even though I have been reading you site forever now (I generally just email you privately). But as a loyal Emuview reader and as a person whom you host my websites for on speedhost, I would like to say thanks for the fine job you have done for BOTH Emuview and speedhost. Hopefully, anything you do in the future goes well.

Damn. For the past year or so, this site was one of the first stops when I'd activate the browser. I too remember getting into emulation in the "older" days (1997), and the excitement it held for me. I remember Dave's Classics, EMU News Service, The Dump, and many of the other old sites. I've got to say, the design for EMUVIEWS was pretty good, and had a "cozy" feel to it. Sort of like a "Mom and Pop store", but for the emulation community. The emulation community has suffered a great loss. I knew this was coming, when the updates became scarcer, and you announced a future retirement. But a man's got to do what a man has got to do, and I understand that. Thanks for a great site. I dunno, maybe someone who knows your style would pick up running the site? Even so, I don't know if it would be the same. In any case, vaya con Dios.

Hi JoseQ,
Although I've been familiar with the emulation scene over the past couple years, I haven't kept up with it, and from time to time get a new spark of desire to go play those games I loved as a kid, even though I'm only 22 now. (BTW--If anyone knows of a game called Guardian that used to run on a NeoGeo system... let me know!!)
My point is, although your site may feel like it is getting stale to you, it is refreshing and exciting to a person new or not up-to-here in the emulation world. Thanks for the great site, and remember that your site is a fresh new experience to new visitors discovering the world of emulation for the first time!

Man, this has been a sad year for us oldschool gamers!!First Sega bails and now you too!!:)(LOL)Just kidding (about the bailing anyway) I can totally understand your reasons. Three years ago I was the biggest emu junkie on the planet(in my own modest estimation anyway). I couldn't wait for thenext Callus update or the newest Sys16, nowadays none of this makes me feel like
keeping up. Maybe there are a lot of emu projects out there but they don't seem to have that heavenly glow that reminds me of being a teenager 10 years ago anymore. Maybe one day that feeling will return, maybe not. Either way maybe it's time to walk away if only to get some perspective. Anyway, that said , man I wish you the best of luck and hope that there is a successor out there with as much enthusiasm as you. Thanks for such a cool site man, good luck!

I, like so many others, apparently, am one of the silent observers who has followed the emulation scene long before its glory days. I mention this only because it serves witness to JoseQ's great imprint on the scene that it so moves me to speak now.
It's funny... The Emulation scene is built on sentiment toward the nostalgia of the 'good old days' of video gaming; days that have steadily faded into the mists of time, moving those who remember them fondly to unite in an effort to keep the memory alive a little longer; to bask in the experience once more.
Yet this great 'scene' that the children of the video game era have built seems many times just as tangible as that bygone era -- subject to fading into those ever present mists of history along with its favored memories.
This sad truth seems all too close at hand when pioneers of the scene, such as JoseQ, decide to step away from the helm, as it were.
Certainly, the engine which is the emulation scene will press on with great strides, as was intended by those who set it in motion. But those who did so may slowly become mere monuments of time and posterity. This is only natural, I suppose, just as there are so many great paintings on hallowed walls depicting heroes of the past. ...Their memories live on.
But don't let this happen before its due time, my friend. None would want to see such a figurehead of positive action disappear from the scene entirely before their due.
Emulation is like all true icons in the stream of time: it never runs dry. It's always moving and discovering things within itself, but never loosing hold of its roots. And even before this, know that the good old days were many, and there is still much to bring back to life. Thus interest rises and falls accordingly, but for the true gamer, never disappears completely.
The real world rules. But who ever said that you can't have the best of both (I never did get why people never do that)?
So stick around, be it as a helmsman or an observer. And if the latter, let us know your there from time to time so we can say hi.
But always remember, the whole point of the Emulation Scene is that there is no "GAME OVER." And that's the beauty of it all. =)

GRACIAS JOSEQ

For my part, I've deleted exactly two messages (plus any replies) in this thread. Neither of them were making any sort of point. One of them was completely full of immature cuss-words, and the other one was severely messing up the layout of this page and other peoples' messages.
If you want to make a point either direction, do so without lowering yourself to the intelligence level of a kid in third grade with extremely low self-esteem. The moderators are here to keep the board civil, not to make sure everyone makes JoseQ feel good.
I have been saying all along that you all can feel free to express your opinions, whatever they may be, so long as you do it in a civil manner. You can totally disagree with every single thing this man writes, and you're welcome to say so, but there are plenty of mature ways to go about it.

(Coming back after about 2 days of computer downtime.)
I didn't boot you either. :) I don't have the ability to do that. I just delete posts that contain offensive, nonsensical language.
NOTE: I do NOT delete messages that disagree with popular opinion - that's not my place. Messages that contain language like "I'm gonna f*cking kick your f*cking *ss and you can s*ck my d*ck you f*cking moron!" are what we'll censor from the board, when and where we find them. People impersonating other people (particularly JoseQ) will also have their messages removed.
And I'm not showing you attitude, dude - I can certainly do that if you like. Nah, what I wrote was just the way it is - I explained what the mods do and how they work, and why they're here. I'm sorry if I came off as being a jerk, though - that wasn't my intent.

While not an active member of the emu scene I've lurked and kept up since the beginning and I have to say that your site was and IS a staple of the emulation community and I feel saddened that EmuViews will probably cease to be though the web being the way it is, I will always keep my eye out for its resurrection.
I understand completely about losing interest in things, should you choose to return to the scene it will be a major day for celebration indeed. (Mame.DK comes to mind)
Thank you very much for your hard work and your enthusiasm, your site helped make emulation what it is today and I'm proud to have witnessed it.

You is bullsh*tting us isn't you?
You old bastard, almost got me eh?! ;)
..OK..
I just had to knock myself into head to see if I'm dreaming or not. Sadly, I wasn't. I believe you are really leaving, it wouldn't even be very funny joke stating you will if you weren't. I can't say I was a regular over here or anything, but I surely grew to appreciate your work while I visited.
I just wanted to say thank you for you and the whole "team" before you go - I and everyone else should've done it a lot earlier, perhaps you'd continued with the site a bit longer then. But people are weird, they usually just give you feedback when they find something to complaint about - if they're happy with things, they don't usually tell it. But even if only a few e-mailed or told you how great your site was, rest assured that a LOT of people loved your site and appreciate what you've done. As hard as it is, I'm sure most agree that you have to do what you have to do and accept it - if you want to get away from emulation due to whatever reasons, please do so, you've deserved it.
You have given the whole scene so much that maybe it is time to devote your time to the other things that you've grown interested in - and, most likely, to yourself and those who are close to you. It seems unmeaningful when viewed on this little font on a computer monitor, but THANK YOU. Truly. There is no HTML tag powerful enough to show those two words in a big enough font and even if there were, I don't know if this damn thing supports HTML but hell, just realize that I appreciate all the hard work you've put into this website. :)
With that said, I leave my humble message. If you ever happen to find new interest in emulation or notice that you didn't really want to give it all up please rest assured that there are a lot of people like me who would really appreciate if you made a 'comeback', even if it was only in a form of small irregular updates or something.. but that is, if YOU want it yourself, don't do it for us. You've gave us plenty of your freetime for the last 3 years, now it's time to think of yourself for a moment.
Thanks again, for everything, and have a great future whatever you plan on doing!
Sincerely,
MC

In a world where gaming companies don't care enough about their customers to invest 5 mintues in them by making any effort to bring back their old classic titles, it's SOOOOOO nice to know there are people out there give a damn and devote their time and skills to such worthy cause. THANK GOD for people like you, JoseQ, and all the other people who helped bring all these old games back to life! Thanks to all of you for letting me be able to make my memories PLAYABLE once again! All of your hard work is highly appreciated! Even though the sights and sounds of the "old arcades" are long gone, it's sooo awesome to be able to come home to my OWN arcade HEAVEN!!! Now i'll never have to worry about my games being "Out-Of-Order" with a broken joystick, or worse, being SOLD so they can bring in another 50 cent UFO little kiddie ride(Doh!)!!! Thanks for restoring and preserving my favorite games of ALL TIME! Thank God for emulators and the people who program them! Good luck to you in all your future endeavors, JoseQ!!! Peace!

Hi JoseQ,
thank you for your excellent work for the emulation community. It always has been a real joy for me to read the top emu news and reviews on EmuViews.
I think it is a really sad day for the emulation scene, as one of its great pioneers is leaving today.
Thanks again for the Rumor Mill, for all the news postings, for the reviews, and for the cool logos for JAE and ONE.
I hope that you will find a lot of spare time now, and I wish you all the best for the future.
Bye
Norbert

Being the host of many of my friend's sites [RIP Translations, X68KPile, Ice Translations/Evolutions], I can only bid you a fond farewell, and you have the knowledge of having helped so many people, both in the active side of emulation, as in the inactive side [the users].
I can't say anything else... nothing comes to mind, heh.
Have a good life.

Thanks for all that you've contributed to this scene. Your website has always been a reliable source for me since my brother got me into emulators 3 years ago, but like you, i've lost interest in emulation over the past few months and i don't have the time to keep up with it as much as i used to. I agree that most everything we would want to be emulated is out already. I've been playing arcade games since the mid '70s (when i was 5) and i've seen it all. Arcades arent the same anymore. Theres always a row of racing games and some kiddie prize machines and MAYBE a pinball machine or a capcom fighter game. Well anyway, thanks for everything you've done for the emulation scene over the past 3 years. You're a legend. Good luck with everything you do. Keep us posted every once in a while. Peace out bro!!!!

Remeber walking into an arcade back when you were a kid, you know in the late 70's and early 80's? Remember those old arcade cabinets, the sounds of games echoing through your ears, exchanging a dollar for four tokens; That's what it was all about. It was a great time to be young and so eager to play video games. As time passed you played all the new games that came out and you remember every one. Eventually "other" things replaced your videogame priority and slowly, over time, the urge became a hobby. New technologies developed which surpassed previous years and sparked interest into a timecapsule of entertainment. To everyone who's ever played an emulated game isn't it great to feel young again? thanks JoseQ for all you have done. Good luck in your future.

Thanks for everything JoseQ, sad to see you go, but if it's what you want, go for. EmuViews, like Retrogames has always been one of my favorite emulation sites. It has had that, I dunno, "homely" feel to it. It wasn't just a news site, the stuff here is something you read not just for news, but for opinions and comments and the like.
Oh yeah, and thanks for hosting my site, [shameless plug] riptrans.emuviews.com [/shameless plug], also. :) Also, good luck in whatever you do in the future JoseQ! ^_^

Jose - you have been a must visit site so long hard to remember what other sites to go to for emulation. Best luck in your endeavors and never say never (g). Maybe one day your heart will be in it again. Maybe not though since like you I haven't played with many of the new emulators out there in so long so understand where you are coming from. I remember when Mame finally did Megazone then wondering what I ever saw in the game (lol). In any event again best wishes to you.

ROMS is what made the new realeases exciting. With out it, it's like getting a spanking new 2.0 GHz Pentium 4, but Microsoft won't let you add any new software.

I get the feeling you would be welcome back to the scene with open arms should you decide to drop by anywhere anytime. Good luck with your future life, wherever it may lead you. :-)

Seriously, you did really good stuff while you were doing it. I downloaded many a ROM here, and even clicked the occaisonal banner ad on the theory that I really ought to once in a while. The ROM scene online is dead, but the site was still a great one even without them.
Go play. You earned it.

You have put a lot of hard work over the years and helped a lot of people get into emulation, thanks for that. but it has been quite obvious for some time, even before the last time you removed the roms and then pur them back again, that you were loosing interest. There are many excellent sites out there, you have had your day joseq, but please don't make a comeback, quit while your still ahead.

I've been tracking the emulation scene since the begining. Piss-yellow SNES graphics, VGB-DOS, and a barely-working C64 emulator. Then came Node99 and the Emu News Service and Atmospherical Heights, and they were Good. JoseQ's EmuViews and Dave's Classics were the two strongest 'second wave' sites, and while Dave's Classics lost its personality as Dave [understandably] had other things to do, this site never seemed to lose that charm. I still check it regularly, even though the emulation scene has done just about everything I ever thought it 'needed' to do and a while lot more.
If the hundreds of messages above don't prove to you that you'll be missed, let me throw another pebble into the pile: this site was the last of the greats, and its passing is both saddening and heartening. The pioneer charm of emulation is gone, but it will live on in those of us who remember those days, and while EmuViews may not have been on the Mayflower, it sure as hell helped conquer the West.

You are partly one of the seriouse reasons I got into emulation besides the fact that I was discovering a whole bunch of cool emulators. I found your site one day and thought to myself, cool, I have a source to keep me up and going forever, I won't lose track of a damn things with this guy around. It is sad to see you go, but I understand you wanting to leave (to a certain extent). I will miss you and the site (which I wish would stay on but I know that's just a wish). Anyway I hope and actually almost expect to at least hear from you on some message board every once in a while.
And as you mentioned emuviews might be done but emulation is as strong as ever and while you will definitly be missed in the scene, the scene will continue and always will continue with the help and efforts of people like you.
Hope to see you around Q,

unfortunally, emuboredom is quite common these days...lots of ppl "kwitting tha sKene" for all kinds of reasons, but mainly because of the "been there, done that" feeling. Ofcourse we're always gratefull when some lame warezkiddie decides too quit, but it sux ass when a die-hard emuveteran decides that "enough is enough"
y00 will b missed...
On behalf of the TOSEC team i wish u the best of luck and hope u'll return one day...
p.s: we always have spots open for emuvets, so if u feel like doing something usefull...:-)
greets and good luck
Grendel,
Founder and coordinator of the TOSEC project

Thanks a lot for the time JoseQ - EmuViews has been one of my absolute favorite bookmarks since...well...way back. :)
Great job on Rumor Mill, it should never be forgotten.
EmuViews has been a true community builder since scratch, and all I can say is:
Good luck in the future!

Heya JoseQ. =) Congratulations on three years of a most excellent website, one of the longest-running singly-owned emulation sites anywhere. (There have been a few others that've been around just as long or longer, but many of them have changed names and/or hands several times.)
Like most everyone else here, I'll miss the daily updates, the Rumor Mills and everything else that made this site what it has been. The Reviews, Interviews, polls, profiles and chat are all very cool features, and I'm glad they're here to stay. Will you still be updating them periodically?
I'm also glad that you made the decision to retire for personal reasons, and not because of the actions of the few, outspoken people who want to ruin things for everyone. When you make a decision for your own reasons, everyone must respect it - and that I do. =)
Thanks again, man. I'll see you on the Game Grid.

Wow, I can't believe I almost forgot about this! Thank you SO MUCH for being the ONLY owner of an emulation site (that I'm aware of) to give so generously of yourself, your time and money, even giving away free arcade equipment! I don't use my HotRod anywhere near as much as I used to, but it still has a prominent place in my room, and I still enjoy my favorite arcade classics so much more with it. =)
I wish I could give more in return.

Thanxx so much for all your work JoseQ. I have visited your great site for more than 2 years, and I have always been coming back for more...until now... But I guess your right, the good retro-emu day´s are gone, and so let the "new generation" have their psx, gameboy and DC emulators, while we play a nice game of galaga on our arcademachine..right!.
Thannxxx again JoseQ !!!!!!!!!
GAME OVER

I've read here lots, probably never talked with you on IRC but oh well... we all are so busy these days... who's got time for massive chat sessions anymore? Keeping up on emus is proving to be too hard for me also... interest now lies in other things... life goes on... and I'm sure yours will too...
good job... I appreciate it.
