MAME News & fixed vMAME - November 17, '98 by JoseQ
I've got some MAME news for those interested in the progress of MAME 0.34. Nicola has announced the close of code nearing and is asking all developers that have unfinished drivers to submit them. This means that what you have seen up to MAME 0.34b7 is probably what you'll see on the official MAME 0.34 once it is released. As you already know, it is planned to have a cool round 1000 games emulated. Since the close of code announcements a couple of interesting things have shown up.
Bryan McPhail, Data East extraordinaire, has submitted his drivers among which a playable version of Oscar came out. I don't remember completely about this game, but it came out by the time Karnov was out, and I believe it was based on similar graphics hardware. This game has 3 processors though, so don't expect any magic out of your Intel CPU. In this driver, also Ghostbuster and Mazehunter are added to the MAME list.
Interestingly enough, even a preliminary CPS-2 driver was submitted by Paul Leaman. The driver, designed for Street Fighter Alfa, had been developed up to the point of identifying the graphics and some other details, but the code is really encrypted. No word on who will continue working on this driver if anyone.
You will probably also see some speedups in various games including the just added TMS34010 games (MK, NBA Jam, Smash TV, etc.). Talking about speed, you may want to check the updated version of vMAME which has included the joystick fix. You can download this from The Official vMAME Page. This version of MAME is supposed to be faster AND it includes the joystick fix, so you should probably give it a try. Thanks for reading!
