Pac-X released! - February 13, '99 by JoseQ
Update! The first version of PacX has been released. This is a very preliminary version which still doesn't have the 3D display working, but you can get an idea at what the game/emulator is going to be like. You can visit the PAC-X Home Page to read about it and download it. Thanks to Retrogames which hosts the Pac-X page, for the news.
By now you should be wondering what Pac-X is, right? It is mostly the work of Mike Balfour, of MAMEDEV fame. Well it is definitely something new and different in a sense. Here's the definition from the page: "Pac-X is a 3-D first-person version of Pac-Man running off of the original game engine through the magic of emulation.". This means that you would still be playing Pac-Man while still looking at a game that seems entirely different.
The game itself is the same as the original Pac-Man as it runs via an emulator core, and reading through the original ROMs as well. It basically triggers different things than what the original game did. This means that everything will "move" the same way, while in essence, the Pac-Man maze may be in a Doom-Like perspective and the ghosts are in 3-D coming at you.
I'm really looking forward to seeing this emulator, which will be released either today or tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how the layout looks, and how you would know what's coming behind you. I'm definitely looking forward to having my enhanced Pac-Man experience. For the first time, we will probably see the game through the eyes of Pac-Man. I will post it here as soon as it comes out!
