Indiana Jones - 20081999120000 by Shadow Lord
Game:Indiana JonesCompany:Atari
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

This was one of my favorites in my Junior High years. Dust off your fedora and curl up your whip: it's off to India to rescue the Sankara Stones from the demonic Mola Ram and his Thugee Cult.
The movie that inspired this arcade game has to be one of the worst sequels ever made, and ironically it is also one of the best movie licensed arcade games ever made. The game takes place in four stages: the Thugee mines, the mine rail depot, the sacred temple, and the rope bridge. In the mines, you must find your way to the railcar, freeing as many enslaved children as possible. Take too long, and Mola Ram will appear in a burst of flame (with his bone-chilling "Wellllcome...") to throw a flaming heart at you. In the rail depot, you must navigate your railcar down a trecherous track at breakneck speeds, while avoiding guards, oil barrels and dead ends. If you make it through the rail depot, you appear at one of the three sacred temples, where you must steal the Sankara stone from the Altar of Kali. Then its back to the mines two more times for the other two stones.
Finally, you have it out with Mola Ram and the Thugees on the rope bridge. This battle is climatic, but easily won. If you've seen the movie, you know what happens to Mola Ram in the end... his arcade counterpart has an identical fate.
Of course, this game has its share of gameplay problems. In the mines, it is very easy to get mobbed by the Thugees with no chance to escape. In the railcar sequence, things go so fast that it is luck, not skill, that gets you through this sequence alive. (That, and a lot of quarter-munching trial and error). Finally, as stated earlier, the final fight is a no-brainer.
MAME's performance on this one is a mixed bag: the graphics, sound and controls are all very faithful, but it is SOOO slow. This may actually come in handy for the railcar sequence, but it can take you ages to clear out the mines.
If you want fast action and are an Indiana Jones fan, you'll want to dive right in. If you are looking for an in-depth challenge and good MAME performance, perhaps you'd better adventure elsewhere.
