Narc by TwinBee
Game:NarcCompany:Williams
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Ever seen a drug addict, with no clothing but an overcoat, living without food, shelter, clothing, love, support, or money? And then, at that moment of pity, ever wanted to pull out a Rocket Launcher and blow his head off, watching as limbs flew across an arcade screen flinging blood all over the streets of Los Angeles? If so, then NARC was made for you.
In NARC, you play as an undercover NARCotics agent named Max Force (Ice Man if you are player #2) bent on destroying “Mr. Big” and his evil drug empire. Problem is, apparently everyone is working for Mr. Big, because they all shoot at you. There is a way to arrest the druggies, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to just use you M-60 type machine gun or heavy shell armor piercing rocket launcher to get rid of that nuisance. After you kill them, you can pick up any weapons, money, or drugs they leave behind.
In this game, anyone with an overcoat, a gun, or any drugs deserves to be blown to bits, bypassing the system we affectionately refer to as American Democracy. The game is supposed to have a significant tie-in to the war on drugs in inner city areas, but it has more to do with blowing up people and watching as their various body parts bounce all over the screen. The gameplay consists of walking from left to right in a straight line while avoiding the drug fiends’ bullets. Later in the game, they throw syringes at you from the right side of the screen and out of car windows, threatening the injection of potentially “addictive and harmful drugs, which damage your health”. The levels consist of different backgrounds with the same left to right walking involved. They include alleys, streets (my favorite is Krak St.), marijuana greenhouses, and an office building. In this game, possession of even the slightest bit of marijuana is punishable by, yeah, you guessed it, DEATH BY MACHINE GUN!
A port to the Nintendo Entertainment system was done by Ocean, and incredibly it became enormously popular. I remember seeing in one magazine (can’t remember which one) that NARC taught good morals and was helping kids avoid drugs. The morals I gain from this game are as follows:

  1. Shoot anyone with any type of illegal substance.
  2. Shoot anyone wearing an overcoat or whom is bald.
  3. Shoot anyone walking around because they look suspicious.
  4. Don’t do drugs in fear of being blown to bits.
  5. Shoot dogs for no reason at all.
  6. We can solve any large scale social problem by shooting a lot of people.
  7. After you have shot everybody, steal their drugs, weapons, money, and cars.

Now, do you see why I dislike this game so much? I wouldn’t let my kids play it. Speaking of which, Shane Monroe claims to like this game. I wonder why. I will ask him on his next ReroRadio.
