Tac Scan by BMan2
Game:Tac / ScanCompany:Sega
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

There's something TOTALLY wonderful about old vector games - the way that even from it's ancient 1982 background - it makes you go "Oooooooh - that's COOL!" the first time you see it.Tac Scan is no exception from the rule - so much so - that's its close to being my favourite mindless shooting game at the moment.
The concept of Tac Scan is not a new one - shoot them before they shoot you. But you'll have to move quickly - as the playfield scrolls either down the screen or TOWARDS you (3d perspective - in 1982 :P) as you try to shoot all the aliens with your ship formation before they either send bullets towards you - or collide with you at breakneck speed. However, your ships can be replaced in the formation - albeit only a few times - with extra ships being able to be quite literally picked up along the way. Surviving this, a wonderfully simplistically drawn flight down a tunnel follows you - before the action starts again.
Graphically - Tac Scan is a vector game - and thus has that same wire frame feel as befits its type. However, the action on screen is scaled well, drawn well - and fluid (especially in the tunnel scene) - giving these wandering lines a real sense of dimension. You'll often find yourself ducking left or right to aviod that speeding ship - or trying to escape the grasp of that nasty laser ship that intrudes from the side - and this is a credit to the artistry of the game.
And this helps the game flow for the player - keeping them absorbed for the journey back through the alien hordes. And really, the games only real fault - is the lack of variation throughout - keeping you cycling through the same levels over and over again - though the different formations of your ship and the random action of the aliens keeps it fresh for much of you're playing time.
Overall - Tac Scan is a kick in the pants to people who say that 1982 graphics was ALWAYS horrible. Tac Scan is fluid in it's look, it's feel AND it's motion - and a welcome surprise to this gamers favourite collection.
