Robby Roto by TwinBee
Game:Robby RotoCompany:Bally-Midway
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Well, almost a month after this became the first public domain, once commercial MAME ROM, Iím writing itís review. To be quite truthful, I had never heard of Robby Roto until it was released as public domain material. My applause goes to the author for obtaining the rights from Bally-Midway and releasing it. Perhaps this will set a trend of other copyright owners to follow suit and release their old games for free, or at an affordable price.

Robby Roto (a.k.a. Roto to the Rescue) is a simple game in which you play as a small red smiling face with legs and a minerís hat trying to save other yellow smiley faces from greedy spiders in a mine shaft. You are allowed to ďdigĒ tunnels through certain colored areas of dirt by spinning into something that looks like a circle with two Lís attached at right angles. As you collect the others, they trail behind you until you deliver them to the exit. However, spiders may steal the faces from you and place them somewhere else within the level. As with similar titles like Pack-Rat, you get more points when you deliver more faces at once. The levels are completed when you have returned all the faces to the exit, and have obtained a key to the exit. If you are cornered, you can press a button which makes the screen cycle through itís 16 colors while making your character transparent, allowing him to pass through various enemies. If you are unlucky enough to be killed, a bird of unknown origen swoops down through the dirt and lifts you dead ďbodyĒ off of the screen. Robby Rotoís graphics and sound are lacking, but the gameplay is addictive. You soon find yourself with 9 faces trailing behind, and spiderís grabbing them left and right. The control is fair, but the poor graphics make it hard to distinguish which dirt you are able to tunnel through, and which dirt you can.
