Prehistoric Isle - August 26, '99 by Max Diablo
Game:Prehistoric IsleCompany:SNK
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

When I was younger, I would always be really excited whenever I found a game made by SNK. In the past, this companies games have always been amazing from a technical standpoint while being very fun at the same time. Prehistoric Isle is no exception.
Being another scroll and shoot game, I was interested to see what the gimmick with this one was. Some games have a choice of weapons, or sometimes even planes. This one has a rotating gun turret that is upgradeable and allows attacking any enemy on the screen. This rather original concept makes the game very exciting, as you are constantly attacked from all angels.
That brings me to the next point that makes this game interesting. Most of the enemies are prehistoric creatures, from the larger dino bosses to the crustaceans in the sea. As an added bonus, whenever you are attacked by a boss, a brief bio of the dino appears on the screen. You will actually learn something while playing this. Of course, you will run into a few creatures who are just made up, but they are created with such a prehistoric feel, you just won't care.
From a technical standpoint, this game is emulated rather well with little to no slowdown and has graphics that are way better then what one would expect from a typical 1989 game, but then this is SNK. Sound effects and music are great on this one. Every dino sounds loud and mean and the music has a very cave-man beat to it mixed with the standard electronic music of 80's games.
The controls react perfectly and as an added bonus to my reviews, I'm going to start listing the controls to every game I review.

Directional Buttons= move plane/sub
Button 1= shoot
Button 2= spin special gun

In general, this game comes highly recommended.
