Yie Ar Kung Fu - September 2, 1999 by Max Diablo
Game:Yie Ar Kung FuCompany:Konami
Type:FightingPlayers:1/2

In the days before Street Fighter 2, most tournament fighting games were rather, well, bad. They were short, unimaginative, and could usually be won by using a nearly un-blockable fireball attack. Yie Ar Kung-Fu is a rare find indeed.
To start, this game is about the efforts of a kung-fu expert to win battle after battle against a large amount of opponents, each with their own attacks and weaknesses. Sadly, you can only be the kung-fu expert and not any of the enemies, but that little problem is soon overlooked when you see the number of attacks you can use. By pushing the controller in different directions and hitting one of the buttons at the same time, you can perform 10+ moves. Each of these moves has a certain distance and area of affect. Each opponent has a weakness to some of the attacks, but also a strong defense against some of the other attacks. It is up to you to figure out how to defeat each opponent. This is quite fun and since there are quite a few opponents, you won't be getting bored anytime soon.
As far as graphics, they are pretty good for 1985. The characters themselves have a good amount of detail, and so do the backgrounds. Also, I never found any slowdown in this particular game, which was nice.
As for the music and sound, both are very pleasant to listen to. The sounds of combat are really good for 1985, and the music is perfectly suited to the action on screen.
In general, I highly recommend you download this one. It's a lot of fun for the short amount of time you'll have to wait downloading it.
