Piranha - October 13, '99 by Dorsola
Game:PiranhaCompany:GL
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Pac Man. Ahhhh, what a wonderful little game... often referred to as THE classic game, the first thing that people think of when you mention old video games... and the basis for an enormous number of incredibly BAD wanna-be clones.
Oh boy. Piranha... *snigger* I'm sorry... Piranha is just one of those games that you'd swear was done by a couple of guys who had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Basically, this game was done using the same hardware as PacMan, with the basic graphics and sound changed around to look like a different game. In other words, a hack. Among other things, the playfield is essentially one really big empty space with a large number of dots that you have to collect - the open nature of this playfield makes gameplay tedious, boring and strategically impossible.
The graphics are just plain terrible. Your main character is now a really ugly mechanical-looking fish with huge jaws. As it moves around on the screen, it actually BLINKS (it's missing a frame), and when you die, it turns into a fish-bone that just flashes a few different colors and then disappears. When you pick up the equivalent of a power pellet, the "ghosts" (what the heck are those things, anyway?) look more like blue deep-sea diver's helmets, which also blink as they move around. The playfield looks like someone scrambled up the graphics tiles for the walls, and the "time tunnels" are so bad that more often they end up screwing YOU up rather than your enemies!
Sound fares no better, lemme tell you. The game starts off with something that's just barely recognizeable as music. The music you hear in the cutscenes (like in PacMan after beating the second level) is just... well, bad. Not much more I can say than that. And you thought the "siren" sound in PacMan got irritating after a while? The background noise in Piranha will drive you bonkers within seconds!
Play control, challenge and replay value are all rock bottom as well - yes, you have the same controls as in PacMan, but you just can't control your Piranha in an open environment like this. The game isn't at all worth playing in my opinion... about the only thing it has going for it is that it performs just as well as PacMan does on all the emulators that support it. (Retrocade and MAME, for instance.)
Piranha... it was a nice try, guys. =)
