Defend the Terra Attack on the Red UFO - October 13, '99 by Dorsola
Game:Defend the Terra Attack on the Red UFOCompany:Hara Industries
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Which classic game genre has more clones? PacMan or Space Invaders? Space Invaders begat Galaxian, and from that sprouted a LOT of like-minded games. Unlike PacMan clones, however, most of the SI clones had more variations, and were consequently more interesting.
Despite its unwieldy title, "Defend the Terra Attack On the Red UFO" (heretofore referred to as "Red UFO") is actually a pretty interesting game. It's essentially Galaxian all over again - even uses the same hardware - but this time, you're battling it out with an ENORMOUS red flying saucer, which is armed to the teeth with smaller saucers. You actually get to blow up the big saucer after defeating all the little ones.
Like Galaxian, however, Red UFO provides little variation and, overall, not a whole lot of challenge. About the only challenge that's provided in the game is that your ship moves really slowly and the small UFOs come flying after you, sending showers of shots your way. If you can dodge the shots, you can be playing this game for hours.
The graphics are nicely done for such an old machine - the little saucers don't animate at all, but the big UFO is very convincing, and even looks like it's breaking apart after a while. For such limited hardware as the Galaxian mainboard, I'm pretty impressed.
Sound is definitely nothing impressive. Single and dual-tone sawtooth waves are hard to listen to after a while, and unlike Galaxian, the enemies in Red UFO give off the same noise no matter where they are or how long they've been on the screen. It gets to be really grating and irritating after a while. (At least in MAME, you can turn off the sound. :)
But then again... let's all remember that the old games made themselves stick in our minds by having sound effects that were so irritating that we could not possibly forget them. :) Red UFO: A novel idea to breathe new life into the Space Invaders idea.
