Dig Dug II - October 17, '99 by Dorsola
Game:Dig Dug IICompany:Namco
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Namco has probably been through more "phases" than any other company I've ever known about. First, they came out with some really powerhouse games. Then they tried making sequels to some of those games, and remakes, and variations... and many of those variations just plain sucked, in my humble, honest opinion. Dig Dug II is one of those games.
In this sequel, you're given a pseudo-3D view of an island, where our hero is trapped with a bunch of Pookas and Dragons. Once again, Dig Dug has to rid the area of these nasty vermin, but this time he's got a new trick up his sleeve: a jackhammer. With this mighty tool of power, the big DD can actually cause parts of the island to fall into the water, along with whatever happens to be on those parts! This is in addition to the spear-pump that he uses to inflate his enemies and the player's ego. :)
Again, an interesting concept in theory. But the execution leaves much to be desired IMO. Control is a little sloppy, and the characters aren't particularly intelligent - they just come right at you in the most direct way possible. You can also only drill on the island at designated "fault points", which at times make it difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish your goals. Graphics are okay, but nothing terribly spectacular, and the sound is mired by an overly saccharin melody that, personally, makes me wanna turn off my speakers.
It is a pretty tough game with enough replay value to make me want to figure out the best strategy for defeating some of the levels. But there's not really a whole lot of point to it - it's a game that really begs for more complex gameplay, but didn't have it there to begin with. It performs relatively nicely in MAME, though it does require more CPU power than its predecessor. I say give it a whirl and see what you think. :)
