Super Space Invaders '91 - October 17, '99 by Dorsola
Game:Super Space Invaders '91Company:Taito
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Before I begin this review, I'd just like to take a moment to bow our heads in reverence for Space Invaders, one of the very first video games ever. It was this game that served as the basis for a great many games for years to come.
Okay, now that that's been said, let's look at its 1990 remake, Super Space Invaders '91. This, folks, is what a remake of a classic game SHOULD be: A highly detailed game that plays kinda like the original and preserves that which made the original FUN. In this case, Taito went even further and brought back not only the original gameplay, but even the original shapes and sound effects from the original Space Invaders! Your first level, while it has a detailed background and detailed sprites, sounds and plays EXACTLY like the great old shooter... you'd swear it was just a hack or something...
Well, almost exactly. The bonus ships that fly across the top of the screen drop powerups, ranging from shield upgrades to limited super weapons. Once you're done with the first round, a new set of aliens pops up, and believe it or not, the strategy for killing these little buggers changes. As the game progresses, you're introduced to all sorts of new aliens as you trek through the galaxy.
There is actually a plot here, but it's a little difficult to figure out exactly what the point of the game is at times. In addition, an experienced gamer will most likely find SSI to be a bit on the easy side, and the fact that there are only two bonus rounds in the whole game really hurts the gameplay a bit. While the graphics and sound are quite good (with music here and there), the bonus rounds and powerups come too few and far between to keep the game interesting.
But if you're not too concerned about that, then this game is definitely for you! It is emulated very nicely (and reasonably fast) in both MAME and Retrocade, so check it out when you can! I definitely enjoyed playing it. :)
