SCRAMBLE! No wait, that was a different game... or was it? Argh, I can't tell! They all look so alike! AAaaaaaaaaaaagh!
Whew. Okay, I feel better now. Lessee... They did make a game called Scramble, and it... well, the best thing that came out of that game was its hardware's ability to play all sorts of other games. And somewhere along the way, yet another Scramble clone came out, bearing the name Vanguard. And it's really not a whole lot better.
Graphics and sound are incredibly simplistic and primitive, even for the Scramble hardware, and repetitive, and hard to look at, and it hurts my ears, and... huh? Oh... yes, dear... Anyway, they're not all that good, but they're at least a little different from Scramble: As you go along, the level scrolls in different directions and occasionally you're treated to some wacky buzzy tunes. And believe it or not, this game was so poorly written that sound stutters on the original hardware! (I've verified this fact - it's not an emulation issue.)
Speaking of different directions, you can move AND fire in four directions in this game. That's probably its only saving grace. The large number of incredibly easy targets and extremely poor collision detection give this game a horribly mixed bag of challenge and replay value - it's easy to hit them, but they can hit you at the same time. In case of a tie, you always lose - remember, there's many of them, but only one of you. =P
