Avenging Spirit - October 31, '99 by CupCakus
Game:Avenging SpiritCompany:Jaleco
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Over the years platform games have worn themselves thin. Every puzzle seems to already be solved, every great hero already saved the day. In 1991 Jalico manufactured what I still believe to be one of the best platform games ever.
While walking home one day with your girlfriend, you're mugged by two suspicious looking gents. (Of course they're wearing the traditional trench coats and sunglasses.) Then rather suddenly, they kidnap your girlfriend and then they kill you.
You awaken to find yourself as a ghost. Your quest: To save your girlfriend. But your ghostly energy is limited, so to preserve your power you're required to possess the living. Every enemy you fight in the game, you can possess. (Except the bosses, of course)
What makes this game one of the greatest is the fact that its different every time you play it, by being able to possess any enemy, you open yourself to a world of strategy, Use the soldier's machine gun for multiple enemies, Ninja's jump higher, The girls run faster. The graphics are excellent with shadow effects, and a different "possession face" for every enemy, none of which aren't just as amusing as the first. Sound is excellent as well, with a different musical score for each level. The controls could be better, it usually takes 3 or 4 tries to get on one of the hundreds of moving platforms. The bosses are generally easy, and for that matter so is the rest of the game. Enemies think a little too long before they shoot, and the traps are usually easily foreseen. You'll beat it the first time you play it, and then you'll want to again, this time with different characters. The game emulates very poorly. In mame32 it wont run at all on a PII, in MAME for DOS it emulated very well on the PII with only a bit of a poor frame rate during scene transitions. Apart from its emulated side effects Avenging Spirits is a game you'll never want to stop playing. Definitely a classic.
