Sunset Riders - October 31, '99 by CupCakus
Game:Sunset RidersCompany:Konami
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/4

Saddle up partner! You've got some bounty hunting to do. Sunset Riders is a little more than I would expect out of Konami, a Japanese company with more talent for sports games, and strategy games. In my opinion it was a real gutsy call for them to go with this platform game, and to top it all the game is set in the American West!
How Konami pulled this one off is beyond me, but my gosh they made one great game here. The intro to the game, appears to be straight from the movie theater, with action, credits, and the standard riding towards the sunset ending. The whole objective is to kill the bad boys, and collect the ransom. Choose from 1 of four desperados, Steve, Bob, Billy, and Cormano.
This game has everything a great western needs, drinking, women, guns, and the horse chasing the train scene. Due to FBI video game regulations in the early `90s our hero's weren't allowed to drink alcohol so when you enter the saloon your hero will take a swig, then spit it back out. Oh well, its such a small price to pay.
Graphics a well done, with adequately drawn backgrounds, and convincing explosions. Challenging, this game is not, with Bob being able to fire buck shot out of his shot gun, and enemy bullets traveling slower than my grandmother's olds. The game emulates perfect, however in the saloon dance scene (Children close your eyes), what appears to be spotlights, are just dark gray circles that block most the beautiful dancers. Play control could be better, the jump button seems to only work when it wants to. Your going to need to learn how to shoot in 8 different directions if your going to win this one. After you beat it, you'll put it away for a while, but I bet no one can keep you from the wild wild west.
