Amidar - October 31, '99 by CupCakus
Game:AmidarCompany:Konami
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Its pretty much an unspoken code, that all games that are classics, despite how crummy they are, they are all good. I just can't bring myself to say this about Amidar. This is definitely not one of Konami's finest. I'm sure you'll hear a lot of debate about this game, but a closer inspection will reveal its just another Pac Man clone. (Yes, I know Pac Man came out in 1981 too, but this was one of Konami's first attempts to take America by storm, and who did America love, more than Pac Man?) "No, the object is to color in the boxes." That's just what it seems is the goal, your real goal is to get rid of all the dots. Graphics are well done for 1981, allowing your "Pac Man" to be a different animal on each stage. You're hero's super saving move is to make his enemy's jump. What this gains you, I don't know, it gives you a little distance between you and them, but they run twice as fast as you, so don't think it will last for long.
Sound is awful, while the music in the background is quite catchy, the sound when you pick up a dot, and when you die, is enough to make you cringe. It reminded me of nails on a blackboard. Controls are simple, up, down, left, right, super power move. Amidar can be fun to play, but you'll always go back to Pac Man. MAME emulates the sound and game perfect. Right to the very last tidbit of noise.
Its important to have this game in your collection, but don't embarrass yourself by playing it too much.
