Mr. Do's Wild Ride - November 7, 1999 by Dorsola
Game:Mr. Do's Wild RideCompany:Universal
Type:PuzzlePlayers:1/2

When I first met Mr. Do's Wild Ride, the first thought that went through my head was "What the heck does this have to do with Mr. Do?" Since then, I've been playing it, trying to find some fault to which I could point and say "Ha! That's why this game sucks!" But: I have to admit, I can't find one. This game is colorful, pleasant to the ears, cute, fun to play, complex, challenging, and it has a really neat concept behind it.
The cute, cuddly clown, Mr. Do!, for some strange reason, decides to start climbing the tracks on various roller coasters at an amusement park, navigating through a maze of obstacles, collecting cherries, and dodging all the cars that roll by much faster than he can walk or run. In this game, your goal is simply to make it from start to finish and avoid getting hit on the way. There are little ladders you can climb to avoid getting run over, but watch out! Many of these ladders will put your head above the next track where it can get hit as well! In addition, there are a number of things you have to watch for - in the later levels, there is an incredible amount of stuff you have to keep track of all at once! Timing and quick reflexes are everything.
This game is incredibly challenging - definitely the most challenging of the entire Mr. Do! series. I have a really hard time getting past level 3, and I have absolutely no idea how many levels there are in the game. The graphics are very nicely detailed, and the mazes are complex enough as to appear semi-3D. The sound is pretty nice too - the music mixes in fairly well with the sounds the cars make as they whiz by. Overall a rather interesting and stimulating experience. Combine that with a good, intuitive control system (still your basic 4 directions, and a "speed up" button, but the execution was nice), and great emulation in MAME, and you've got yourself a great game to figure out! :)
One word of warning, though: Don't attempt this in real life. Walking on roller coaster tracks can be hazardous to your health, and is not recommended.
