Street Smart - November 9, 1999 by BMan2
Game:Street SmartCompany:SNK
Type:FightingPlayers:1/2

Street Smart is one of SNK's last non Neogeo titles - however - it certainly set the scene for the onslaught of mind numbing fighters we saw on the ageless 2D system. It mixes a quasi three dimensional playfield - with a standard kick/punch fighting style game - and unfortunately just fails to pull it off.
I've never liked "two button" fighting games - as they just seem to either lack the controls needed to feel like you're achieving something - and also the range of options is somewhat limited. The genre is headed beautifully by the masterful Karate Champ - which used the novel idea of using two joysticks for the moves - or even the perennial Yie Ar Kung Fun - which allowed the player to vary the move used along a two dimensional playfield - and succeeded.
Street Smart doesn't quite make the mark. Controls are sluggish - and often the action turns into a button bashing exercise - and a frustrating one at that. The computer players often seem to have impeccable timing - and while you're given a chance at the start. Soon the computer will just duck under your frenzied attack and flay you around the screen with ease.
If there's anything to say that's good about Street Smart - is that it does act as a good pre-cursor to what the Neogeo did well quite often. The graphics are colourful and well drawn - with that edge typical of SNK's sprites. Also - the concept of being able to move back and forward freely on the playfield allows for some variation in the fighting. Add to that a two player simultaneous option - and the action actually becomes slightly more playable - and even more frantic than usual.
But again - the negatives rule. Sound is uncharacteristically bad - with the music quite annoying - and the digital voices badly sampled and out of place. And it's this lack of attention to details - combined with the general lack of a totally good idea of the genre that fails Street Smart badly. Maybe they learned from this game for the Neogeo :P
