Robotron 2084 - December 30, '99 by Dorsola
Game:Robotron 2084Company:Williams
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Attention all Smash TV fans. I'd like to point out this little game in the corner of the arcade. It's an oldie, but you might be surprised to know that THIS is the game that gave Smash TV its start. Dating way back to 1982, Williams created this game to appeal to the crowds searching for high-action shooter games.
Robotron 2084 takes place in... well, 2084. It's a time when cybernetics, robotics and genetic engineering have resulted in a major catastrophe, nearly wiping out all human life. You are a super-being capable of defeating the Robotrons, which are out to destroy the last human family. Your job: Save the humans, and eliminate the robots. To assist you in your task, you have been equipped with a rapid-fire laser that can fire in eight directions. Two joysticks are provided: one for movement, and one for firing.
Now for my editorial: This was a great game for its time, in terms of concept and gameplay. The sound and graphics are fairly simplistic, but hi-tech enough to convince the average player that this game was ahead of its competition. However, personally I find the graphics to be awfully confusing, simply because literally everything on the screen is extremely colorful, flashing or cycling colors, and generally making it difficult to see what you're doing. The advanced particle effects are cool too, but at the same time can add to the confusion.
This is one really challenging game, though. Unless you go in and change the CMOS settings so you have lots of lives and play on the easiest setting, you're not likely to make it past the first four or five stages. I don't know if there is a maximum number of stages - my guess is that there probably isn't.
Robotron has been emulated in MAME for quite a while now, and to the best of my knowledge, it performs like a champ on almost every system. Given that, I think you'll enjoy it - play it for a while, then go play Smash TV again and compare. =)
