Mario Bros - January 5, 2000 by Ice Knight
Game:Mario BrosCompany:Nintendo
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Before there was Super Mario Bros there was well..Mario Bro's. You might see some of the elements that made it into SMB here. The first thing you will notice is the turtles. You have to jump up and flip them over, then move to the level they are on, and kick them off.
This is the basic formula that you will follow through the whole game. The number of enemies and there styles are however, fairly varied. You will face crab like creatures that speed up on your first hit and only stop after two. The fireflies can hover for a second and cannot be hit will in mid air. Even latter you will face ice.
The number of enemies and the increasing difficulty make for a high re-play value. The graphics are also good. Animation is used sparingly but effectively. If you leave a turtle on it' back for two long, it will crawl out of its shell and kick its shell back over. If Mario gets hit by one of the fire-balls that float around he actually gets "fried". These are nice details that add fun to the game. Two player co-op mode is also a nice and fun feature.
The sound is basic and does require samples. There is not any actual game music, just simple sound effects. This however, works great for this game. I cannot think of a style of music that would work on this game.
MAME handles the emulation of this game very well. Most users should see a good 60fps. Mario responds quickly and smoothly. With only one button (jump) keyboard should be all you need to emulate this one.
The only thing I find annoying about the game is the "demonstration mode". While it is useful to show you how to play the game, you cannot break out of it. You are forced to watch it every time you start a game. A very minor flaw in an overall great game.
