Donkey Kong 3 - March 25, '00 by Dorsola
Game:Donkey Kong 3Company:Nintendo
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

Donkey Kong is back in this sequel to the original Donkey Kong. In this game, the big monkey has decided to invade a series of greenhouses, and it's your job to make sure he doesn't take over. Armed only with an unlimited supply of bug spray, you must keep DK from taking over your garden by shooting him in the butt to make him climb the vines he's descending. It seems the big ape is pretty popular among the insects, though - DK will shake up the hives near him, and swarms of bugs will then attack YOU and try to steal your plants! Eep!
This game is a significant improvement graphically and aurally over the original Donkey Kong (and its successor, DK Jr.). Featuring more detailed and complex graphics and a much more advanced sound system, there's plenty of action to keep your eyes glued to the screen and your hand on the joystick. This is also a good challenge of a game, with different types of puzzles and many different types of enemies to fight all at once.
Play control is also good for the type of play - you can fire enough puffs of bug spray to keep DK busy, and jumping up and down on the platforms is easy and intuitive. You also move just fast enough to effectively dodge most of what comes after you, yet slow enough so as not to be out of control. Overall, rather well though-out in my opinion. Combine that with now-perfect emulation in MAME, and you've got yourself a winner. =)
And unlike Donkey Kong, this game keeps me coming back for more - I used to blow lots of cash on this machine. Give it a try - see what you think... and try not to have too many nightmares about defending your garden against an impossibly huge gorilla.
