Star Wars by BMan2
Game:Star WarsCompany:Atari
Type:ShooterPlayers:1

NO!!!! I flat out REFUSE to make any mention of that phrase. You know - that one that litters Star Wars - about being able to conjure powers from your mind - and having it by your side. DEFINITELY NOT! And why don't I hear all the ardent Star Wars fans scream? Because it's a cliche - and it's something that misrepresents this game - because if you think some "force" is gonna help you in Star Wars - you've got another thing coming.
Stars Wars is a vector game made WAAAY back in the heady days of 1983 - and boy did it rock the arcade scene. Boasting a snazzy sit in cabinet - it was truly an arcade experience to behold (even I still have memories as a 7 year old playing Star Wars in a pitch black arcade!!) Star Wars is ALL atmosphere - in fact - few games have gone close to capturing the essence of the movie/theme they were emulating than this one. All power to Atari I say.
Your mission - should you choose to insert your coin (or play MAME/RC as it maybe :) ) - is to sit in the hot little pants of Luke Skywalker - and pilot your fighter through various waves of attacks - and in the end - destroy the Death Star at the end of each stage. In your way - are enemy fighters, towers, bases, fireballs, gun turrets, and good old Darth himself - with appropriately evil voice to match. Sound's pretty daunting doesn't it? Well - as I insinuated at the start - Star Wars is NOT a game for the faint-hearted. The learning curve is quick and steep - and before you know it the fireballs are flying thick and fast - almost TOO fast at some stages.
For those of you to remember the arcade version of this classic - you wil also remember the double handed flight stick and trigger control of this game - further adding to the whole "experience" that this game provides. MAME and Retrocade players - hallelujah you've got the mouse folks - which makes things ENORMOUSLY easier for the average game player. Is having the mouse cheating?? Well .. sortof .. I mean .. not many people have a huge flight stick handy for this game - and you've gotta get a break SOMEWHERE along the line :).
Star Wars is powered by the Atari vector system - and hoots along at a great rate of knots. The starfield moves and turns for you - and the perspective effect inside the death star is slickly done - not bad for 1983 eh?? :) Music is of course provided by the stirring Star Wars anthem - which sounds just as inspiring in bings and bongs as the full orchestral version - at least with 5 fighters and 6 fireballs flying up your tail pipe it does :) Speech is provided for effect in the game (although no QUITE supported by Retrocade yet) - and is an excellent touch to the game - the icing on the cake so to speak.
So overall, this game is no cliche. Star Wars takes a popular theme - and translates it perfectly to arcade fans everywhere. So don't bring your "force" along with you - bring your money :) You'll need it!
