Crazy Climber - April 1, 2000 by Dorsola

Here's another game that just about everyone in emulation has heard of or played at one point or another. Crazy Climber... as its name suggests, you play a guy who's just a little nutzo and decides to climb up the face of a tall building. Why? Who knows? Crazy Climber is all about skill, timing, and perhaps a bit of luck. You have two joysticks to control your man - one for each side of the climber's body. Together, they control his arms and legs and allow you to scale the building - it takes some practice, though.
For a game that was made in 1980, Crazy Climber had a lot to offer. It was one of the first games (if not THE first) to use sampled voices and sound effects - they sounded pretty strange, but they were for the most part clear. Your guy will start yelling "Go for it!" when you let him just sit there, and occasionally if he gets hit, he'll say "Ouch!" or "Oh no!" if something knocks him off the building - this can include flower pots and garbage being tossed out by crazy building tenants, bird droppings, windows closing, falling signs, and even the occasional really large crazy monkey. There will occasionally be some music here and there as well, though most of the game is filled with the sound effects associated with your movements.
Graphically, the game is pretty detailed - the climber has a large number of different positions he can be in, making his movements fluid and easy to understand. Other objects are similarly detailed, giving you the impression that a man not only is climbing a building, but he's got lots of people and things trying to stop him from succeeding. While it's not too terribly difficult to get to the top of the first building, I have a really hard time getting past the first few floors of the second building - that's when it starts crumbling on you. ;-) For this reason, it gets a high Challenge Factor rating from me. But unfortunately, despite all these great things, Crazy Climber is not the kind of game I would want to play over and over again - it tends to be repetitive and ultimately the same game every time you play it.
Then again, you'd have to be seriously crazy to try this in real life. ;-)
