The End - April 6, 2000 by Dorsola
Game:The EndCompany:Konami/Stern
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

Hey, look at that! Another Galaxian clone! Shoot the aliens before they shoot you. Pretty simple, right? Been there, done that.
Not so fast. Look at this one a little closer. It seems that in this game, your enemies have a slightly different goal in mind. This time around, you're fighting off a bunch of bugs that want to steal a bunch of little brick-like blocks from right under your nose and spell out something with them. You have an unlimited supply of these blocks, but if the aliens succeed at their goal, it's ... well, The End.
Like many of the games of its type, The End doesn't have much to offer in the way of graphics or sound - it's all pretty basic. In the case of this game, some of the graphics look funny and can be confusing, so I unfortunately can't give it much in the way of a graphics rating. Sounds are not as grating as other games I've played of the same type, but they're still kinda edgy. And unfortunately, the play control in this game isn't that great either - your ship (actually a bug of some sort) shoots slowly, moves at a pace that's sometimes difficult to manage, and always starts at the rightmost position of the screen - which makes defending your base a bit difficult.
It's a pretty challenging game, with a definite ending - eventually, no matter how well you do, the game will end sometime. Because of this, I fear The End isn't the Final Word in shooters - not by a long shot. It performs well in MAME, but in my eye, it's not one I'd keep playing over and over again. Play it a few times and get good enough to watch The End appear. But my recommendation is to let it go at that. =)
