Ladybug - May 24, '00 by Dorsola
Game:LadybugCompany:Universal

Pacman? Sure, everyone's heard of that game! Some of you may then also remember this game, one of the many games that was inspired by the all-time classic... and yet never fared quite so well. Lady Bug, another particle-chomping game, pits you (oddly enough, the Lady Bug) against a variety of seriously ugly insects and a few poison traps, to collect particles (tiny X's), vegetables, hearts and letters. Like many of Universal's games, you can score an extra life or a special bonus round by collecting the letters to spell out EXTRA and SPECIAL, respectively. The twist to this game? The Lady Bug has the ability to swing open and shut some swivelling doors, which can effectively block your enemies.
Not really much to say about this game. The graphics are passable, but nothing to write home about, and the sound can be downright annoying at times - loud, grating and obnoxious. Play control, too, has major problems - your Lady Bug stops immediately when you let go of the joystick, and even if you're just one or two pixels away from a corridor, you can't turn and go down a side corridor unless you're exactly lined up with it. Your character moves pretty slowly, too, which makes the game a bit too difficult when your enemies start moving faster than you.
The challenge factor on this game is such that, if you have the patience to play this long, you can have a pretty hard game after a few levels. But Lady Bug has never been able to capture my attention for long enough to really consider it either a very challenging or very worthwhile game, as you can see by my fairly low marks in both Challenge and Replay Value. The goals of SPECIAL and EXTRA are too hard, in my opinion, and there's just no real strategy evident in the movements of the enemy insects - most of the time they can be seen just moving back and forth without any real sense of direction - unless they're chasing you too close for comfort.
In short, not one of my more highly recommended games. Play it if you like - many consider this game to be a classic. But just because it's a classic doesn't mean I have to like it. ;-) It does, however, run perfectly in MAME and with fast, smooth emulation.
