| Super Pacman - May 27, '00 by Dorsola
| | Game: | Super Pacman | Company: | Namco | | Type: | Platform | Players: | 1/2 | Super Pacman was the game that was originally slated to be Pacman's direct sequel, although Ms. Pacman unofficially took that spot. (In fact, Ms. Pacman was released while Super Pacman was still in development.) In this game, you run around in a different style of maze, collecting fruits and other types of foods, avoiding the ever-present ghost monsters, and collecting as many points as you can. To get to the foods, though, you have to collect keys, which then open gates, so you can pass through. You still have the original power pellets, so that you can chomp the ghost-monsters and send them fleeing for their homes, but you also have a new pulsing green pellet, which when eaten transforms you into... *dum dum da dummmmmmm!* SUPER PACMAN! Now easily three times your original size, you can speed around the playfield while your enemies become really tiny in comparison and just pass right through you, for a short time. You can also knock down doors and gobble up pretty much anything in your path.
Okay... so why, then, does such an innovative game get only a mediocre rating from one who's so into these types of games? Well, mainly because I believe that, in adding so many new things to the Pacman genre, they lost the original simplicity and strategic thinking that made the original Pacman so much fun. In addition, the new sound effects for the game don't sound nearly as good, the graphics look more limited in comparison (despite there being more of them), and it just doesn't have the same flair as the older Pacman games.
It does emulate well, though, and it's definitely worth trying once. Just, put it side-to-side against Pacman, Ms. Pacman and Pacman Jr., and I'll probably go play those instead after trying this one for a while.
