Space Panic - August 10, '00 by Dorsola
Game:Space PanicCompany:Universal
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

This is one of the games I never saw in the arcade, but instead played on the ColecoVision a looooooong time ago. The graphics and sound on the Coleco were actually pretty good - it was one of the better games to come out for that system. So, given that the home version was so great, I expected to see even better graphics and sound when downloading and emulating Space Panic for the arcade.
Not so, they said! Little did our intrepid reviewer know that he was in for a major disappointment. But before I go on about the technical details, let's look at what the game's all about. In this game, you're running around on a series of platforms and ladders, with aliens chasing you. In order to kill the aliens, you have to dig holes in the platforms for the aliens to fall into. When you've got one trapped, you then fill up the hole again to cause it to fall. Kersplat. Simple as that. Kinda like Lode Runner, except that your goal is to eliminate your enemies, not to collect stuff.
It's a pretty simple concept - almost too simple, really. In order to make the game worth playing, one would expect some nice graphics and fluid gameplay, and perhaps a music score. But unfortunately, the arcade version of this game doesn't provide any of those things. Instead, the graphics are very CGA-ish - there can't be more than about 5 or 6 colors on the screen at any one time, and the characters look terrible - the sound is next to non-existent (chirps and bleeps and crashes here and there) and irritating the rest of the time, and the game suffers from a very low frame rate. No offense, Universal, but I've seen more advanced games do better on the Apple II. And because of the low framerate, I also noticed that the controls are rather clumsy. 'Nuff said.
The arcade version of this game really leaves a lot to be desired. If you're going to play Space Panic, I suggest finding a copy for the ColecoVision and playing it there - not only was it done better, but it plays better. :) For now, this game gets my official Seal of Disapproval.
