Time Killers - January 24, '01 by Eazy Cheeze
Game:Time KillersCompany:Strata
Type:FightingPlayers:1/2

In 1992, a company I had never heard of, Strata, released a game that at the time I thought was incredibly cool. The game was Time Killers, and it resembled Mortal Kombat in many ways, with one exception: dismemberment did not only come at the end of a match! Yes, you could chop off your opponents' arms and head at will, for some true Monty Python-esque style action scenes.
This, coupled with the amazing traditional cel-animation graphics (as opposed to motion-captured animation) still makes this an awesome game. The gameplay is nothing new; you choose from eight characters, all from different time periods (some awesome fan (or official?) fiction has been written up about the characters; find it at GameFAQs - search for Time Killers). You have four buttons for each of your limbs: free arm, weapon arm, free leg, weapon leg. You also have a taunt button. If you hit all five buttons at once while your opponent is stunned, you can perform a death move, which is total dismemberment. In fact, it may take a while to get used to the weird controls. Sound is great, with the chunky sounds of a limb being cut off portrayed in all its gory :) Graphics are great, as I said; severed limbs stay on the playfield, and you can see them twitching (!) It's a pretty hard game, as the CPU pretty much whips your butt on the default difficulty level, and it's often hard to hit an enemy just right so their arms or head come off. As in all games of this type, I'd wager that the replayability factor is low; you just play through with all the characters and see all their endings, nothing special. Still, while it lasts, it's an EXCELLENT game. And the performance is not half bad: on my Celly 566, the game only needs 2 or 3 frameskips regularly, and it's smooth after that.
