The Electric Yo-Yo - December 1, 2002 by KieferSkunk
Game:The Electric Yo-YoCompany:Taito
Type:PuzzlePlayers:1/2

The Electric Yo-Yo is a game I never knew existed and wouldn't have discovered had it not been for an event called California Extreme, held at the San Jose Convention Center in California each September. It is an event in which a huge number of classic video games and pinball machines are all put together and put on Free Play for a whole weekend! A classic gamer's paradise, and a good place to learn about games you've never seen before.
So, after having gotten a chance to play this game there, I got a copy for MAME and took a more in-depth look. It turns out to actually be a pretty cool game! It's a puzzle game in which you control a yo-yo, which is attempting to pick up all the dots in a two-dimensional arena. To score points, you latch your yo-yo's string onto a dot and move to it. The further away the dot, the more points you score, and each level has a theoretical maximum score. Standing in your way are a few enemies: One zips around and randomly touches dots, turning them temporarily into powerups. The others are little green blob-type things that move from dot to dot. If either of them hits you, your yo-yo explodes and you lose a life.
This game is all about strategy. There's not much else to it, really. Its challenge factor is pretty high, but simple as the game is, its control system is a little confusing. The graphics are minimal, but passable, and sound is also minimal and tends to be somewhat grating after a while. If you can stand that, however, you'll have a good time. =) Unfortunately, there appears to be a problem with emulation in this game - it tends to crash at times, particularly in attract mode. For this, I'm docking a few percentage points. If you're lucky enough not to run into this problem, however, it'll play fine on most any computer.
