Pac Man by Maddog
Game:Pac ManCompany:Midway
Type:PlatformPlayers:1-2

May I have your attention,please...Everybody bow your head in respect, the game we are talking about now is not any usual game. This one is THE classic of classics,a piece of gaming history, one of the few games that can safely boast that they were there at the very beginning and paved the road for everyone else to follow!I don't think this game actually must be reviewed,it seems like a sacrilege to criticize it,but on the other hand,no reviews page may be complete without a reference to this gem of "ancient" gaming history!Just keep in mind (especially the younger ones among you...) that we are talking about a 1981 game. Several among you may not even have been born!Today it might seem rather plain and boring to many, but then...
The idea behind PacMan is plain, yet strangely addictive. You control PacMan (essentially a yellow dot with a mouth...) in a maze full of little dots, that must be cleared. This maze contains also PacMan's notorious enemies, the four colorful ghosts Blinky,Pinky,Inky and Clyde, that chase you frantically around.Luckily for Mr.PacMan,there are also four big power-up pills.Eating one of them makes the four beasties to turn blue and flee in panic for a little while. As long as the pill's effect lasts,PacMan can become the hunter himself and eat the four ghosts, scoring a healthy amount of points (by the way,it's still a great challenge for any gamer to catch all four ghosts in the few seconds the effect lasts and score 200+400+800+1600 points!).More points can be scored by eating the fruit that occasionally appears in the middle of the maze.Once the maze is cleared, you start all over again, only this time the ghosts are slightly faster and more clever... Basically, that's all.Very simple, but so addictive that it took the world by storm and led to millions of variations and reincarnations!
As mentioned, the age of the game does n't allow for any special graphics or sound.Remember, the size of the thing is a measly 24K. Keeping that in mind, what is there still does a decent job.The sprites and the motion are quite good and the sound effects seem strangely appropriate and include very arcade-like sounds that stick to you and spice up the game nicely.Definitely outdated now,but still enjoyable as a whole!
Being perfectly emulated today in many emulators,PacMan brings up memories of our childhood to older gamers (like me...) and will probably give the younger ones a chance to see a live piece of gaming history, maybe even a laugh at the crap games people once went crazy about :) Whatever the case,it's worth a look for everyone.Oh,those were the days...
