10 Yard Fight by BMan2
Game:10 Yard FightCompany:Irem
Type:SportsPlayers:1-2

Now being an Australian, gridiron does absolutely NOTHING for me as a spectator sport. It's long, drawn out, and lets face it - they wear PADDING for goodness sakes! What I want is something that is much quicker, can be delivered in shorter doses - and yet still gives me a challenge. Hence I have always been firmly of the opinion that gridiron is a MUCH better computer game - than an actual sport.
However, the majority of gridiron games on the gaming market are intent of recreating the actual tactics and longwindedness of the game - making the player learn complex scenraios and formations before they can even throw the ball. Incomplete I say!
10 Yard Fight is a very old gridiron game that more people should take notice of. It is simple, there are no overheads - and it fits well within the arcade credos. You have a specific objective - to get to the end zone before the time runs out - and on your way to achieving this - achieve a first down to gain extra time. Simple!!
Graphics in 10 Yard Fight are nothing special to look at - but do they need to be? You can see all of your players clearly and they move well - albeit a little jerkily at times. It performs its function admirably we shall say. Sound is a little on the sparse side, with little to no music - and only very scratchy "crunching" sound effects to aid you aurally along the way. Perhaps a little more attention could've been paid to this area.
A minor distraction however - because 10 Yard Fight delives SIMPLICITY to a game genre that is littered with formation, tactics and timeouts. You can either run the ball the appropriate 10 yards, or pass it to your advanincing teammates - one of whom you can set where they advance. You can block by guiding your teammates - and well - run like the clappers! Because run out of time - and there's no second chance - making the game quite difficult as your quota of time decreases rapidly through the various "levels" of football.
A short review for a short game. However, 10 Yard Fight takes a complicated game - and brings it to the masses in a perfectly simplistic form. Bravo I say - and now - I've gotta go kick that last field goal :P A very nice completion for the Irem boys!
