Gunsmoke by BMan2
Game:GunsmokeCompany:Capcom
Type:ShooterPlayers:1-2

Polish off the six shooters folks! It's time to head deep into the old west where the bullets fly and the bad guys die. That's right folks - Gunsmoke today gets a full inspection - and doesn't scrub up too bad at all. Gunsmoke pits you as the owner of two guns facing the minions of bad guys in the old west. You have three buttons which control your direction of shot - kind of handy when you can only face in one direction - forward - there's no looking back for the cowardly son! Various power ups and helps (horses etc) are thrown in along the way to help you in your quest - but watch out for the end of level bosses - who take more than just a lucky shot to bring to justice!
The graphics of GunSmoke are appropriately - well coloured anyway - giving the game an initial rustic feel. The sprites have some detailing in them - but there are just not enough animastion frames in them to stop the overall feeling of jerkiness throughout the game. Sound is an annoyance rather than an addition to Gunsmoke. Throughout the course of the game, the music track is overbearing - and not really appropriate to the situation. Sound effects, conversely, are tinny and quite weak - and are lost behind the brashness of the music.
However, technical brilliance doth not make the game - and Gunsmoke can prove to be quite addictive. The levels are hard, without being impossible - and the control system - while unusual - is quite a novelty - and further adds to the difficulty of the game. lso, upon losing a life - you are often transported back quite some way in the level - adding to the 'If I could only just ....' frustration/addictive qualities of the game.
My first encounter with Gunsmoke was a NES conversion - and to be honest I liked it then. I'm glad to say that as a game, the original Gunsmoke does not disappoint. Although technicall, it could use some work to "clean up" the edges of the game - what you have here is a well rounded shooter that adds a novel theme to an old genre. Giddy up!
