Power Spikes by BMan2
Game:Power SpikesCompany:System V
Type:SportsPlayers:1-2

Power Spikes 2 is a game for the Neogeo that has it roots firmly planted in the classic volleyball game for SNES - Hyper V-Ball. The engine is the same - you have the same options of teams (mens, women's or futuristic) and your "moves" are identical. However, for the Neogeo version, the graphics have been updated to a much cleaner and more intricate level - and the sound upgraded to well done samples - and a funky new sound track.
So this is good right?? Hyper V-Ball was a highly addictive game on the SNES - so any improvements in it's technical qualities would be great - right? Wrong. Power Spikes 2 somewhere along the road to higher technicality loses the very addictiveness and playable that the SNES version had - leaving you with a pretty to watch - but ultimately boring volleyball game.
Graphically, Power Spikes 2 is a game that adequately befits it's 1994 release date. Sprites are smoothly drawn and well animated and the backgrounds are although static - lend a nice feel to the game - giving a sense of atmosphere. Sound has also been giving a major improvement over the SNES version - with the soundtrack now quite rousing and funky - and the samples lending again that real sense of involvement in the game. A job well done by the programmers.
However, the overwhelming impression I get from Power Spikes 2 - is that whoever made it - DOESN'T play volleyball. The dynamics are ALL wrong. The gameplay is quick - but rallies BARELY last through the first spike from your side - while the "special" moves that the futuristic option give you - really only seem to benefit your computer opposition. Combine with this that the scoring system is TOTALLY wrong - giving a point for every point won (commonly known as rally points) Not only does this further detract from the realism that the game is trying to put forward in it's play engine - but makes the difficulty level FAR too easy.
Overall - I have heard comments from #neogeo that this is the worst released game for the system - and that's maybe an unfair comment. Power Spikes 2 is a very technically well done piece of programming - that unfortunately - someone forgot to put an actual game into.
