Missile Command by BMan2
Game:Missile CommandCompany:Atari
Type:ShooterPlayers:1

You know, in an effort to find some of MAME's oldest (and worst) games last night - I came across Missile Command. And I hesitated, because I've seen Missile Command on many many early 80's movies. Sure, it might not be technically brilliant - being a few lines and vectors around the place - but Missile Command is a surprisingly addictive game. I'm only glad I wasn't old enough to lose all my coins into it!
The concept of Missile Command is one of life and death. The sky is raining missiles upon your six cities - and you control your three missile bases to try and stop the onslaught - before the missiles destroy your six cities. Now, arcade freaks will know that this was the trackball game - flinging it wildly from side to side to stop the missile madness - though if you're a MAME person like me - you get the luxury of a mouse. It's almost too easy really isn't it?
Or is it? Try a few levels of Missile Command, and this game gets frantic - BIGTIME. It will take all of your skill and guile to be able to position your crosshair to launch a great barrage of missiles. You get the occasional extra city to replace your well bombed ones - though lose a missile base to a stray enemy missile - and the task just gets harder and harder.
Technically, Missile Command is a simple game - but performs it's function very well. The lines are clear, colourful and the collisions work well. Sound is nothing to talk of, and occasionally some of the explosions sonds tend to grate after a while. But I bet you won't have time to notice - the only sound you'll hear is your anguished scream after 1 out of 500 missiles sneaks through your air tight defences:P
What can I say - I went looking for a dud game - and instead found something I quite liked. Missile Command is simple, easy to get into - and highly addictive. And with the added luxury that MAME gives you of mouse control - all the better!
