Street Hoop by BMan2
Game:Street HoopCompany:Data East
Type:SportsPlayers:1-2

Need a break from the fighters folks? Well, break out the homey pants and go get some serious air - today we take Street Hoop through it's paces. Street Hoop method of play is very similar to the other popular arcade basketball game - NBA Jam - giving you a 2 1/2d court to work with. In fact - I found this game in the arcade AFTER I had spent copious amounts of money finishing NBA Jam (26 game winning streak baby! :P) And to be honest, I wish I had've found it sooner - as Street Hoop gives the sports fan that rushing basketball fix - in a much neater and more efficient package - while still maintaing the glitz and glamour that many contain.
Street Hoop works similar in concept to many basketball games. Your team (selectable from 8) must be ahead at the half time - and full time intervals. Be behind - and it's game over bub. Each team has it's own strengths and weaknesses - whether it be dunking, 3 point shooting, defence or speed. A good mix of these attributes helps you overpower your opposition. To add to the fun, you have a "super shot" meter - which after a certain amount of successful shots - gives you the opportunity to unleash an unstoppable 3 point shot or dunk - handy for that last minute nailbiter.
Graphically, Street Hoop is well drawn - although a tad blocky in places. The sprites are large and cartoony in style - as is the want with many Neogeo games - and the reactions are well animated - if not a little corny at times (ie the token basketball showmanship after every violently performed dunk) Sound wise, the music of Street Hoop is quite funky - and adds to the atmostphere - although it's repetition (and it's loud volume in MAME) will probably grate on you after a while. Still , the speech is crystal clear - and the sound effects have a deep seated edge in them that further enhance the hurt you inflict on the opponents (or the hurt they inflict on you!)
Any disappointments in Street Hoop? Well , nothing's perfect. As with all basketball games - patterns tend to become predictable - and the endless sequence of teams does drag a little bit for the player. Add to this no save option - and Street Hoop can get a little bit monotonous - especially for the skilled gamer. Also, there is a definite advantage to playing the 3 point shooting teams - as they tend to be quite accurate from outside - making it hard to beat a team constantly scoring one more point a trip up the boards than you. The programmers have tried to overcome this by sometimes making you miss on several occasions in a row - to even up the score somewhat. However - this becomes VERY annoying in the heat of battle - and sometimes downright unfair.
Overall, Street Hoop is a well presented alternative to many of the newer basketball games on the market. It aims to provide a simple and instantaneous fix for the sport heads and gamers alike - and delivers with a touch of flair on the side.
