Altered Beast by BMan2
Game:Altered BeastCompany:Sega
Type:PlatformPlayers:1-2

Long, long ago - when gods walked the earth - great heroes ventured out to rescue young maidens and turn into .. bears??? Altered Beast - is a different game to say the least. You are sent out by the god Zeus to rescue his daughter from the evil forces of the world. To achieve this - you must fight your way through 5 levels of enemy infestation - each concluding with a different boss character designed to halt your progress in it's tracks.
However, you are not alone in your quest. Kick a few white wolves along the way - and you are presented with power-ups - that initially bulk up your hero to punch and kick stronger. However, collect three of the power-ups, and you are transformed into one of the many beasts - from a bear to a flying dragon to name a few. This allows you the power to take on the afforementioned boss - and complete the level.
Technically, Altered Beast was a good game - and I remember a sideways glance always seemed to catch the attention of the passing gamer. The graphics are nicelky animated - with only a few of the characters being a little short on graphical frames. Backgrounds are well drawn and appropriately moody - and although the game seems to be block based - it carries off the "feel" of each stage with the appropriate ambience. Sound wise, Altered Beast holds it's own - with again appropriately moody sound tracks that sit nicely in the background. Actual game sound effects and short and stumpy, but serve the purpose quite well.
So how does this strange game play? Well ... quite well for a while. However, Altered Beast - although having five stages - still seems like you're playing the same stage five times - just with different scenery and enemies. This limits the actual playability and lastability of the game. Combine this in with the difficulty factor getting quite tough towards the end - Altered Beast can be a bit of a labour pain. Adding to this, Altered Beast is a pattern based game - meaning everytime you play it - the same enemies come up in the same place - I used to be able to finish the first level with my eyes closed.
So is it different enough to be good? Well, initially yes. Altered Beast is a nice arcade game for a bit of a bash. However, for serious gamers - there's just too much missing within here to seriously recommend it as a truly original and entertaining game.
