R-Type by Maddog
Game:R-TypeCompany:Irem
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

OK everybody, dust off your fire buttons...This game is not of any ordinary type:This is R-Type!One of the greatest shooters EVER, this baby is only for those with a veeeeery itchy trigger finger. :) Do you feel you 're up to it? Not wasting much time with plots, your mission in the game is to crush the evil Bydo Empire.Doing this involves blasting all aliens that come in front of your lasers.Of course,as a shooter that respects itself,R-Type allows you to improve your initial peashooter with some much more powerful additions :) So,you can get various types of missiles, lasers, extra probes and other hard-to-describe goodies,to help you deal with the nasty opposing aliens. These come in many-many types: walkers, flyers,BIG motherships and even some things that look just like they escaped from the Alien series of films! Not a game for the faint-hearted,I can assure you!Another nice feature is to keep fire pressed, watch the nose of your ship gather interplanetary matter, let loose and there goes a big and deadly firebolt,to do justice to anything in its' path!
Yes,I can hear you say,but haven't we seen all this before? Well, while R-Type gains no bonuses on originality,it's the execution that counts,is n't it?And that closes very much to perfect in this game. That's even more impressive if you take into account the years weighing on this game.Yes,believe it or not,it dates back to 1987,but it doesn't show anyplace. The graphics are impressive, with fast-moving and colorful sprites. Some of the end of level bosses take up almost the whole screen and even the rest of the baddies cannot be called tiny... Add to this a billion bullets flying in all directions, the varying backgrounds and some great explosions and power-ups and you'll probably agree the game is a visual pleasure-not that you'll get much time to admire the scenery anyway! :) The sound includes the expected blasts and pows, along with some nice background tunes. It adds to the game, without getting in the way any more than necessary. The difficulty level seems well pitched.Hard but not impossible describes it well,I think. This makes for a challenging game, that has the all too important just-one-more-go factor as one of its' greatest qualities.
There's not much to fault this game on.Probably the worse thing is that once you lose a life (along with all the extra hardware...) while deeper in the game, the rest of your lives are probably goners too, since the regular shooter is n't up to much and the game usually won't sit and wait for you to power up again...Some may also complain that the game is harder than most, although I believe a bit of training will bring back rewards soon :) A better initial screen,or between-level cuts would n't harm either...
But,none of these can stand in the way of a great game, that deserves many, many goes.If you agree, your choice of emulators is between the classic RAGE and the new candidate,M72.My opinion is to use M72,as it supports full sound and ziproms, plus a couple of other nice features, altough RAGE may prove faster for those with older systems. In all, both emulators reproduce the game well.So,people...
...stand up and take a look at this game.Be warned though:Lots of swearing and a sore trigger finger are very likely to occur! If this doesn't put you off, give it a try. It's well worth it!
