The New Zealand Story by Maddog
Game:The New Zealand StoryCompany:Taito
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

A cute little platform game, starring a kiwi?I bet no one could take this seriously, but -much to your surprise- you'll find that the concept, however silly it might be,is a very enjoyable one and that actually there's a good game hidden beneath the fluffiness :)
One fine day, while our star and his pals were hanging around,a big bad seal appeared all of a sudden and bagged them all.The only one who had a last moment escape was,not to your surprise, our heroic birdie.Of course, this despicable act deserves its' punishment,so the little kiwi took his bow and arrow and set forth to free his pals and punish the nasty seal.To succeed,he must pass lots of platform-filled levels, full of (cute) baddies, ranging from shells and boomerang men,to cats riding on balloons. There are five stages, each divided into substages and with the usual big boss awaiting at the end.Luckily, our kiwi is an all out athlete. Not only he walks, but he's also capable of gliding around on balloons (usually you steal them from the baddies that ride them) and diving.Watch that air supply, though,or you'll end up with a drowned kiwi! You 'll also find all sorts of goodies, like lasers,baddie-freezers,bombs etc, etc. These will make your life easier!
If the whole cutesy of the thing doesn't make you wanna throw up,then the game is very well executed ;).The graphics are colorful and crisp-clear (although the kiwi looks more like a canary to me) and there's a brilliant little tune that plays along plus some nice effects.Gameplay is probably what matters most in these cases, though. In this region, the game is an all out success, unless you really hate platformers. The initial stages are fairly easy, growing harder as you progress, bosses are difficult but not at all impossible to deal with and there's enough variety so that you won't be bored easily.Fun and challenging are two words that spring immediately to mind...
On the other hand, lowdowns are limited.Sometimes the needed accuracy of your movements will feel downright annoying, since a couple of pixels may mean the difference between life and death and the path you must follow isn't always clear. But you can learn it better by persevering in it (...and a couple of continues, too!).Unfortunately, also,two-player mode isn't simultaneous play, but rather two separate players taking turns (and make sure you set the dipswitches to "upright cabinet",otherwise player 2 plays with the screen reversed!).
But these, won't take much off a good little game...It is emulated in MAME,but it is also one of the few games to have a stand alone (and brand new!) emulator for it:Tnzsemu v2.01!Its' emulation of the game is better than MAME,allowing three variations of it to be played (the alternate version is significantly different-and harder!), while MAME has a few glitches and only one playable version.Speedwise, things will be OK for most systems.
If platformers are your bread and butter,The New Zealand Story will give you something to play for a long time.A weird game in plot and concept, but juicy all the same...Kiwi fun from N.Z. :)
