Moon Patrol by BMan2
Game:Moon PatrolCompany:Irem
Type:ShooterPlayers:1/2

It seems to me - that I'm stuck in my local squash courts in 1984 - because here's another game that's vivid in my memory from that period - and one which I will STILL drop twenty cents into at my local arcade. Strap on the helmet folks - and put the pedal to the metal - it's Moon Patrol time, courtesy of Irem.
Moon Patrol was I suppose a revolution in 1982 - I can't really remember - being 5 years old was a bitch for the long term memory :P It combined your "platform" driving game - and your alien shoot em up - and made you do both at once - tricky huh? You are armed with two guns - one which fires rapidly in the air to dispatch the nasty aliens - and one frustratingly slow forward firing gun - to clear out dirt and other ground based obstructions. More on this later. Also at your control - is three step speed control - and a rather handy jump - for avoiding pitholes and other ground obstacles. Sound like a lot of work? Well, it is - but thankfully it comes within reason.
The Moon Patrol landscape is divided into 26 sections - one for every letter of the alphabet. At each section - a different threat faces you - and these range from slow or fast moving shooting aliens - to rotationg ships that destroy the landscape - forcing you to reach fro the jump button in the middle of frantic shooting. Other sections provide ground based obstacles such as boulders, mines or tiny rockets to name a few. As you progress through the levels - you may find a combination of all the above - making for quite a torrid time at the controls. It is this that makes Moon Patrol quite appealing to the layman - it's difficulty ranges from a simple introductory level - to a blindingly hard second run through of the alphabet (the advanced stage) - giving enjoyment for the novice to the expert gamer alike.
Graphically and sonically - Moon Patrol is nothing to cheer about - but it performs it's function admirably. The graphics tend to be blocky - and the collision detection (particularly with holes in the ground) can sometiems be a little on the harsh side. Sound is full of wails and wallops as the aliens rain their missiles from the sky. Acompanying it all is a cute little ditty the WHOLE way through the game - it almost seems CUTE at some stages. Believe me - it gets lost very quickly in the action. Controls could be varied on the arcade version between one and two buttons (the one button version using up for jump) - personal preference the only telling factor between the two versions. Otherwise - the controls are intuitive - and easy to find - even on those horrid cocktail versions :P
Overall - what can I say? In my mind - Moon Patrol is a classic - simply because it belongs to a group of games that introduced me to arcade gaming. It is quick - though can be long - is ALWAYS a challenge to play - and - my local arcade still has it! What more could you want?
