Spy Hunter by BMan2
Game:Spy HunterCompany:Bally / Midway
Type:ShooterPlayers:1

There's an element in mystery about playing arcade game you've never seen, heard of, or know the slightest bit about. And, from the in game documents in Spy Hunter - this game sounds like it was impressively built - with wheels and triggers - the whole shebang.
However, from an impressionable gamers point of view - and from this side of the monitor - the actual GAME Spy Hunter is let down badly by sloppy handling and an impossibly difficult task at hand. This game personifies the question that haunts many arcade games - is it MAME or is it the actual game that loses the interest of the gaming public?
Fear not loyal emulation lover - for this game is bad in it's own right - and I doubt that only the diehard fan would disagree with me. For all it's apparent bells and whistles - Spy Hunter is a very hard game. In the first "stage" of Spy Hunter - you are against the timer to score as many points as you can. You do this by destroying enemy cars, boats and obstacles - before they destroy you. At your arsenal are a stock standard machine gun to knock your enemies (and unsuspecting bystanders!) to their grizzly end. Also to help you end your quest - is a weapons truck - which you can meet up with on road - and obtain smoke screens, oil slicks and missiles to pound the opposition into submission.
The problem is once the time runs out - you're stuck. Depending on how many points you got in that period - that is how many lives you get. Now I'm not much at this game - but I'll guess you'll be struggling to get more than two. This isn't much for the road considering that the odds are SEVERELY stacked against you. This not only is annoying, but very frustrating for the player - and certainly not an incentive for myself to be popping the coin in the slot. I also can't find a purpose for the game. Maybe there is an end to the level - but I sure as hell can't find it!
Graphically, well - this ain't pretty folks. Sure it FLIES speed wise (mostly TOO fast in high gear) - but otherwise the graphics are blocky - and the collision detection is TERRIBLE (another hindrance to your progress) Sound is another poor aspect - with the occasional white noise sound and bump to assist you in the aural department.
SO there you have it - if you haven't got the impression I don't like this game - well - you'll NEVER believe me. Although I've never seen the arcade cabinet for this game - which SOUNDS quite impressive - Spy Hunter just does not do anything for me as a game. This fact alone would probably draw me away from it on the occasion I do find it - no matter how pretty the packaging.
