| Donkey Kong Jr. - 20081999120000 by Shadow Lord
| | Game: | Donkey Kong Jr. | Company: | Nintendo | | Type: | Platform | Players: | 1/2 | Spinoff arcade games are usually drab retreads, but Donkey Kong Jr was an
exception to this rule. Turning the tables and making Mario the bad guy, it's
up to Donkey Kong's baby son to save his daddy from the evil plumber's
clutches. Cool! "The Mists of Avalon" meet Pac Man.
The game essentially involves climbing a network of vines to the top of the
screen, while avoiding these strange bear-trap-pirahanna robots that Mario
keeps deploying. Your only defense against your foes is to drop fruit on
them (yes, a peach will destroy a solid steel robot for some reason...) and
to avoid them. The game is surprisingly difficult, and the home versions of
the game may have softened you up to how tough the arcade version really
is (now its for money, after all :P).
Like most early arcade characters, Donkey Kong Jr is apparently made of glass
and can't survive the smallest spill... a 3 foot fall kills you. Also, he climbs
very slowly while his foes are very quick. Of course, he has a failing of 99.99%
of all arcade heroes, past, present and future -- he can't swim and even touching
the water on the bottom of the screen spells doom.
MAME has perfect emulation on this one. The music, the sounds and the experience
is all there. The teenage group may want to check this out to see the origins of
their childhood arcade heroes in the Mario Brothers Series, when they first came
into being..
