Tron - 20081999120000 by Shadow Lord
Game:TronCompany:Bally Midway
Type:PlatformPlayers:1/2

TRON is an early movie-licensed arcade game. Appropriate, since the movie deals with a computer programmer who gets trapped in a metaphorical arcade game world. (English majors will recall the 'God trapped in his own paradise' story device... lol) But the game accurately captures the duel of the light cycles (where your enclosed moto-bike zips around a grid, leaving a large wall behind it, and eventually everyone crashes into a wall except a lone survivor) the tanks (why is it ONE shot kills us and THREE shots kill the more numerous foes? Shouldn't it be the other way around?) entering the MCP cone and duelling it out with the Grid Bugs. The interface is going to be a pain in the butt here: the original TRON console had a triggered joystick and a spinner. The spinner isn't needed for the light cycle duel, but every one of the other sequences use it, and it is very akward using keyboard keys to substitute for the much faster spinner. There is a rather glaring omission here: there is no disc duel. The warriors would throw these glowing frisbees at each other, which could only be deflected by your own disc... if you got hit, you were "de-ressed" (wiped out). Sure, The Discs of Tron came out to make up for it, but it is missed here. Also, this has to be one of the only movie-licensed arcade games where the hero's nemesis is absent! Sark, the evil warlord, is nowhere to be found in this game. Still, this game was a huge hit in the arcades of 1983, and will take gamers my age back to the days when the critics raved that the special effects in TRON would never be topped.. (-choke-)
