| | Game: | Samurai Showdown IV | Company: | SNK | | Type: | Fighting | Players: | 1/2 | The best fighting series ever makes a return in this, the finest game of the series.
All fighters from SS3 are featured, and even three new ones (and a surprise return of
an old friend). Sogetsu, a Ninja of the Kazama clan, embued with power of the Ice
spirit, must kill his brother (both of family and of clan), Kazuki, for leaving the
clan to save his sister, Hazama, from the vile clutches of Zankuro, the malevolent
master of Amakusa Shiro Tokisada. Amakusa is playable in this game as in the last one.
And as in the previous game, there are two alignments to choose from: Shura, or Slash,
meaning a good alignment, or Bust, an evil alignment. The Amakusa you fight in his
castle is always of the Bust alignment. Both alignments have different moves and
poses.
The graphics in this as in all SS games are top-notch. The animation quality, while
not as detailed as in SS3, still conveys the sense of truly feeling the blows being
delivered. A new feature to SS4 is the No Contest moves. These are the Fatalities of
SS4, but instead of being killed in an overly gory way, the exposed parts are hidden;
these fatalities are anachronistic, much like you'd see in a movie about an ancient
war, or in Conan the Barbarian when Thulsa Doom decapitates Conan's mother.
All in all, a great game. Though, in the Forest stage, there is some slowdown when the
lens flare/sunlight through the trees is shown.
